Grey sky and Half-smiles

We sat in silence for about an hour. it wasn't awkward, because we were all lost in our own thoughts. The doctor left a while after and another one with curly hair and green eyes came in. Luke didn't even move, apart from his chest going up and down with a struggle, as he breathed in and out. The nurse, who had really big blue eyes, kept going from outside to insidee, checking Luke's pulse every few minutes. It's funny how you notice small things like eye colour and what someone keeps doing when you are lost in your own thoughts.

It started to get late, and as the sky darkened and turned into a thick grey, I wondered where I would sleep. I just wanted to stay with Luke, and fall into his arms and just forget the world. But as Luke lay there, machines keeping him breathing, I realised I may never see him open his ocean blue eyes. Or see his cheeky, stupid grin. I couldn't bare to think I may never hear him speak or say 'I love you' again, in a shy Australian accent. I needed him to wake up. What if he woke up and forget me? I had to stop thinking like this, because Ashton had started to realise I looked worried.

"You alright?" He asked, his accent thick as ever "You look, uh, worried or something..." He trailed off. I tried to speak. I really did. Try and say I did want to be ok. Try and lie and say I was okay. But I just couldn't. All I could do was silently nod. He half-smiled back and nturned to face the large square window. "I really don't know what we're going to do" He said, quietly, to himself.

Michael was twidling his thumbs. He wasn't good with stuff like this, I'd learned. He had a happy, bubbly personality. Anything sad and quiet he didn't know how to cope with. He looked like he was deep in thought about something, probably Luke. When he saw me looking at him, he tried to grin, then let his head fall down to look at the blue, patterened floor.

I looked at the small clock about the water cooler near the entrance. It was nearly half ten. Mum would be worried. "Can I, uh, ring my mum?" I asked the nurse. That was the first time I had spoken in about 3 hours. My throat was dry and started to hurt. The nurse nodded and pointed to a phone on the wall outside. I nodded, then stood up from my chair and walked out. I unhooked the phone and dialled Mum's number.

"Charley?" A voice squeeked through the phone. I waited a few seconds to answer.

"Yeah, it's me" I managed to get out.

"Where the hell are you? Iv been worried-"

"Luke's in hospital" I murmered.

"What?" Mum quieted down.

"He" I chocked "He was in a car accident with his Mum on the way home from his family" The line went quiet and I wondered if she had hung up.

I was just about the hang up when I heard a breathe on the other end of the line. "Is he, um, stable?"

"Not yet" I started to tear up "No" I bit down on my lip hard to try and stop the crying but the pain just made it worse. A nurse walked past with a clipboard and gave me a worried look. I just nodded and she walked off.

"Where is he-Where are you?" She asked.

"Manchester Roy-Royal hospital" I stuttered, biting my lip harder and almost causing it to bleed.

"I'll be tehere as soon as"

"Mum, wait, you don't have to-" But before I could stop mum the line went dead and I realised she'd hung up. I put the phone back on the hook and went to go back into the room.

Ashton was stood up now, looking outside at the pale grey-soon-to-be-black sky. He was so deep in his thoughts he didn't even realise I had walked back in. Michael looked up at me and half-smiled.

"What did your mum, um, say?" He asked, and Ashton turned around realising I was now back in the room. Michael's green eyes stared at me and I wondered what he had said, if anything, while I was out of the room.

"She is coming" I said and they both nodded.

"Oh" Michael said "Okay"

"If any of you are tired" Ash said "You can, uh, sleep in the car" No one answered. I couldnt leave Luke. If anything happened, good or bad, I would never forgive myself. Luke stayed still as a statue, apart from the chest. I just wanted to hug him. Mess his hair up even worse, and watch dumb movies with my dumb-ass boyfriend. But he just sat there, like I'd put him on pause. I almost forgot Ashton was speaking when all eyes turned to me.

"Uh, sorry, what?" I asked, not hearing what they had said.

"I said did you just see Luke move?"
