“What time is it?” Ashton said, in a raspy voice. He had slept for the last hour, leaning on my shoulder, but I didn’t mind. Ashton’s curly head was messy and his eyes were red. He had quite big eyes. They were such a weird colour, mixes of hazel and green and brown. When they were strained, though, they turned into a deep brown-like hazel. He wiped them with his hand, and blinked furiously.

“Uh” I checked my phone “Nearly 5” I sat up. I was numb, but I kind of liked it. Not being able to feel pain, when it demands to be felt, was a pleasure. I almost forgot why we were here, until I heard a doctor whisper to a nurse, or a door swing open and hit a wall, then I remembered why. Ashton yawned. It was freezing, but he stayed there in tank shirt. His shirt was a ripped band shirt, with multiple holes. I don’t know how it got in that state, or why he didn’t just buy another shirt.

“Holy shit” He said, still wiping his eyes.

“I know right”

“Has Michael come back?” He asked.

“No” I answered “He hasn’t”

“Oh” Ashton said “You know, Charley, if you wanna, uh, go sleep, I’ll stay here?” He asked.

“Its okay” I said, I would never leave Luke “I’m okay”

“Alright” Ash stood up. He stretched. “I’m gonna, uh, go on a coffee run, you want any?”

“Sure” I replied “Thanks” I wasn’t a big fan of coffee. I usually only had coffee when my family went on vacation and we had to drive overnight. My mum always said “never drink coffee when you don’t need it because when you aren’t tired, it tastes like swamp water”. I stuck to that.

Ash nodded, walking in the direction of the coffee machine. He walked lazily, with bad posture, and like he didn’t care. He left my line of vision, my eyes still lingering.

“Mrs Champagne?” a voice echoed through the halls and, what felt like, my body. I looked at the small man with a clipboard, stood at the door way of the room opposite the one we were in. He had thick brown hair, which swooped over his glasses. He must have only been about 5 foot 6.

“Um, Yes?” I replied quickly, standing as I did so. This must be about Luke. Ashton had been gone a while, probably going to check on Michael or something. It was past 5 now.

“Luke” He said, breathing in. He must be bad. Is he dead? What if he is? I’ll never survive. I’ll break, and no one will be able to fix me. Ever.

“What? What about him? Is he okay? Is he-“ I rambled.

“Calm down, he’s okay” I sighed a sigh of relief. I closed my eyes, silently thanking God or whoever was up there. He looked me in the eyes. “He’s stable” My whole body went numb. A good kind of numb, though.

“Can I see him? Is he awake? Is he talking?” I spat out questions like they were water.

“You can see him, he is awake, but he won’t be taking much” He said, not adding too much detail. I smiled, crying with relief. The doctor stepped back, ushering me inside the room, whilst holding the door. I almost ran through it, stopping when I entered.

I saw him.

He was plastered in wires and looked so fragile.

But he was him.

His eyes were half awake, still the beautiful blue I fell for. His chest lifted and fell, as he breathed.

The doctors all nodded, there were four of them.

“We’ll just be outside, we’ll need to check up on him” A tall one with curly, red hair. They all left and it was just me and Luke.

I was crying, but with relief. I didn’t know if he knew I was there, but I was pretty sure. I walked up to the seat near his bed, dragging it quietly, as to not make much noise. I sat, looking at the blue eyed boy.

“Hi, Luke” I murmured.

“He-“ Luke took a breath “-llo” He was alive.

“Luke” I said, starting to cry. Tears free-falling. Luke held out a hand, free from wires. I grabbed it, gently. Collapsing into his hand, I let my face hover on it, tears falling onto it and the ground and his hand.

“I’m” He breathed “Sorry”

“You don’t have to be sorry” I said, through tears.

“Am I-“ Luke took a long breathe.

“Take your time, Luke” I said “I’ve got all the time in the world”

He smiled. “Am I-Am I okay?”

“Yes” I said “You are fine” I sighed. I fell into his chest, avoiding his bruises and wires. He held on.

“Will I- live?” My stomach tightened, and I could feel my ribs.

“You’re fine” I murmured “You’re okay”

“Okay”

“I think you should get some rest Luke” I said, noticing his eyes glowing red. I wanted to stay with him forever, but not when he needed to get better. I didn’t want to be involved in him hurting.

“No” He grabbed my arm, holding in with a gentle force. I sat back down.

“Okay, okay, okay” I said falling into Luke’s arms again.

It felt like we were there forever. Doing nothing. I could feel the weight of my eyes enclose me and within a minute I started to drift of laying on Luke’s head. Doctors had come in to check him, I sat back when that happened. Now, as I laid on the blanket laying on Luke’s chest. Falling.
