Josh jumped off his skateboard and landed on the steps to the tour bus with a soft thud, and opened the door with a click. The first thing he saw as he walked in was Tyler's yellow sweatshirt in a crumpled heap on the floor, he must have come straight back to the bus after the show. He stopped to pick it up, and that was when he heard the scream. He knew it was Tyler, but the absolute desperation and fear in his voice froze Josh's blood. Without hesitation he ran toward the sound coming from the bunk room. He didn't consider that there might be something dangerous in the room, that running toward it wasn't the best idea. The only thing he could think was, Tyler is in danger and I have to help him. He threw open the door, his eyes scanning the room.
There was Tyler. His body contorted into a fetal position, he was shaking and whimpering. His eyes were closed, and josh realized that Tyler was asleep. He rushed over to Tyler, wrapping his trembling hands in his own steady ones.
"Tyler! Tyler are you ok?"
Josh watched as Tyler's eyes shot open, darting around in shock.
"Tyler you were having a bad dream, you were screaming. Are you ok?" Tyler looked terrified. The kind of the look a rabbit gives a dog who has pinned it down. Fear in its most pure and cruel form. He gripped Josh's hand as if it was his last tether to reality. His eyes searched Josh's face. He reached up and touched his hair, his touch gentle and delicate.
" you're alive." Was all he said in the faintest of whispers. Relief flooding into his pale face.
" I'm still kicking around, you won't be able to get rid of me, I wouldn't leave you alone in this world ty." Josh replied, a faint smile curling his lips at the corners.
" josh I'm sorry." Said Tyler his voice cracking slightly.
" what do you have to he sorry for Tyler? I'm blessed you are my friend, I wouldn't be the person I am without you."
" you said I was selfish and I broke you and stole your life. Then you... then you.." and then Tyler was crying. He didn't want to, didn't want to be seen like this by josh but he was scared so scared.
" you killed your self." He finished, tears rushing down his face
" shhhhhh ty it's ok, I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Josh said, comforting Tyler with his words. He slid onto the bunk next to Tyler's shaking body, wrapping his arms around the small mans shivering body.
Tyler leaned into the warmth and comfort of Josh's body, melting into his touch. Their contact convincing Tyler that josh truly was alive, that the room full of smoke was nothing but a nightmare, nothing but his imagination and fears churning together.
Josh smiled as Tyler clung to his chest, he felt a small wet spot on his shirt where Tyler's tears were seeping though the fabric. He didn't mind, he couldn't think of a place he would rather be than comforting Tyler Joseph.
" josh?" Tyler murmured a few minutes later, "will you tell me a story?" Josh shifted his eyes down, glancing at Tyler.
" about what?"
" anything." Said Tyler.
" ok... let me think." Josh ran furiously through the memories that packed his head. Sifting through the folders of childhood moments and conversations. Finally he found something.
" when I was a kid. Or a young teen I guess, a bird hit my window in the very early morning . Of course I didn't know it was a bird at first, all I knew is something had hit my window. My bedroom faced the sunrise, and the sun always made the glass of my window glow a gold color, so I think the bird saw it glowing and flew into it. So little me, imagine me about a foot of two shorter, wearing all black, wth dyed black hair with those angsty Emo side bangs, went downstairs, avoiding all the creaking stair boards so I wouldn't wake anyone up. I found this little bird below my window, it wasn't really special in any way, it wasn't colorful or big, just a small sparrow you know? I picked it up, and I remembered it feeling so fragile, but it radiated heat, like it had a fire burning inside it. I carried it up to my room in my teeshirt, I folded it up so it was kinda like a kangaroo pouch." At this point Tyler giggled sleepily, and josh felt happiness blossom through him.

" anyway... i carried it up to my room and set it on my bed. I went and got one of the few shoe boxes we kept that wasn't used for a school book project, and put some toilet paper in it. It wasn't much I guess, but when I set that little brown bird in it, it looked up at me, and I swear if birds are capable of being thankful, that was one damn thankful bird. I set the box on the windowsill, and then I forgot about it being there and started playing my drum kit. It wasn't a huge drum kit like the ones I have now, just a small cheap one. After about a hour on the drums I remembered the bird, and felt really guilty because birds can't like loud noises right? But the bird was just sitting there staring at me, it didn't try to get away or anything. "

"Over the next few days I fed it pieces of bread from the crusts I didn't eat on my school sandwiches, and the bird listened to me play my drums. It was a nice relationship we had, me and that bird." Josh paused and looked down at Tyler, his eyes were barely open, fluttering on the edge of sleep.

"I never really told anyone this but you ty, but I kept that bird for about a week. He, or she, or whatever that bird identified as would sit on my cymbals looking at me with its deep brown eyes, his head tilted slightly to one side.
One day, it was a warm spring Sunday I think, I'm such an old man I can't remember these things anymore. Anyway it was warm, and I opened the window and let the breeze rush in along with the sounds of birdsong coming from the neighborhood park. Apparently I wasn't the only one to hear the birds. My little Brown bird hopped out of her box, right up to my hand, pecked me slightly right on my pinky, then turned to face the window, shook out her wings and flew off, issuing these soft chirps. I stood there leaning out of the window for a long time, watching the bird disappear into the early morning. I remember thinking, no matter how weird this sounds, that I wanted to fall in love with someone just like that bird. Kind and sweet and beautiful, someone who could just sit for hours listening to me play."
Josh finished, sighing a little with relief, it was nice to tell someone of his days with the bird, no matter how childish the memory was, it was still special. He suddenly remembered Tyler, and smiled as he saw the brown haired man curled against his chest, his eyes closed, sleeping peacefully. Josh slid his arms around the Tyler, and sighed contentedly, feeling his eyes starting to close. Soon both josh and Tyler were asleep, snuggled comfortably against each other in the bunk, dreaming of spring days and birdsong.
