The rest of the flight passed in a blur. Tyler ordered sprite from the stewardess, making sure to specify he wanted a whole can, like all smart people do. Bubbles of energy and excitement ran through him like the bubbles in his soda. They eventually descended through the clouds and touched down with a screaming of breaks and little wheels scraping along the runway.
He hugged the girl next to him goodbye. She hugged back tightly.
"Thank you again Tyler."
"You are very welcome."
And then all of a sudden he was off the plane and jogging through the airport dodging people at the last minute.
He hopped on a taxi outside, breathing heavily, still clutching the bouquet.
The roses were white, tinged with peachy pink, like they were dipped in a sunset.
He knew the were perfect for Jenna, he had known as soon as he saw them. He sighed as he thought about his beautiful wife. The anticipation of bursting through the doors of their home to surprise Jenna kept his heart beating in double time.
After what seemed like hours (the tiny digital clock on the dashboard above the car radio read 5:57pm) the taxi was driving though the neighborhood Tyler lived in. The houses were old. They weren't falling apart like some older houses were, they were the kind of old that promised that smell of worn wallpaper and dusty sunbeams cast on couches worn in perfectly.
The taxi driver dropped Tyler off on the street in front of his house. It was a deep buttery yellow with a shingled roof with a substantial amount of green moss growing in its cracks. He noticed that the dogwood trees that towered around the house had small pink and white buds sprouting from their arching branches. It was good to be home.
Tyler slipped up the wooden steps quietly, slipping the white door open carefully as to make no sound. He slipped off his vans and placed them in the corner of the entry. The house was strangely empty, so Tyler slowly padded up the dark wooden stairs, and walked along the hallway that lead to their bedroom. He carefully discarded the bag that the flowers had been wrapped in, and held the bouquet in one hand, softly turning the doorknob of the bedroom door. It opened with a click.
The first thing he saw was a pile of clothes on the floor, then his eyes slowly traveled up until they fell on the bed. There was Jenna. There was Jenna, her blue eyes flashing her blond hair wild, her cheeks flushed red. There was Jenna, tangled in the bed sheets. There was Jenna, her arms wrapped around another man. Her creamy skin pushed flush against his tanned chest. Their heartbeats pierced the silence, the sickening thrum echoing in Tyler's head.
Suddenly she looked up, her started doe eyes meeting his shocked brown ones.
He felt numb, like his veins had frozen, finally his body had given up on him.
The roses slipped from his fingers and landed with a dull thud on the ground.
