When Tyler arrived at the venue he was mobbed by the crew. They were overjoyed to see him, saying how much they had missed him. Tyler didn't really want to be here, but he was here for the fans, that's how it had always been. In the end one life is so much less important than thousands of people coming together to celebrate life.
His smile felt weak and meaningless, and his skin felt to tight around his bones.
"You nervous ty?" Josh asked, his sincere face filled with worry. He was wearing his Nike shorts already, and had dawned his red eye makeup. It made him look edgy, his eyes were still sweet and gentle but if you squinted you could see a fierce power that made Tyler's insides tingle a little. His chest was defined by sharp lines carving muscle, the long strait lines of his Collarbones sloping up to meet his strong shoulders.
"Yeah, it's been a while." Tyler said, though he knew this wasn't nerves, something else he couldn't place, something he wished would just go away.
Josh, seeming satisfied with Tyler's answer leaned over and tied his red nikes swiftly, holding the drumsticks he had been carrying between his pearly white teeth.
Tyler's feet didn't want to, but they eventually lead him toward the stage. He felt his stage persona seeping into him, but what usually felt like empowerment now felt like a cage. He wished he could be anywhere else, anywhere, wished he could just sleep even though he wasn't tired.
Just then josh approached him from behind, slipping his comforting arms around Tyler's body.
"Tyler the moment you step on stage you will create a miracle. Do you want to know why I know that? Because I've seen you do it hundreds of times. Sometimes you are excited, sometimes not, but you never fail to amaze those people out there," he said gesturing toward the audience," I've seen you sing when your eyes were red from crying, when there were bruises on your wrist from the rubber band you used to wear. I have seen it Tyler, the strange strength that takes over when you sing, like your voice is a caged bird inside you, and once it is released so is your soul" josh spoke his voice deep and low in Tyler's ears, his calloused hands resting lightly on Tyler's shoulders sending shivers through his body. Their touch was heavy enough to give purpose, yet as gentle as a summer breeze, giving him the strength he needed. He rested his four head against Josh's, feeling the connection that comes with closeness, closeness with someone who you love.
Tyler's feet pounded on the hard stage floor as he ran out, but everything but the vibrations up his legs was lost in the sound of the thundering mass of people screaming for him.
He knew something was wrong the moment the stage lights landed on his skin, burning his strength away, leavening him with the fear that had been his reality for so long.
