It was so like when he had opened the door to the hotel room hours before. The door cracked farther and farther open revealing Tyler body. Josh thought he was already broken beyond repair, but when his eyes fell on his loves frail body his insides shuddered and his heart quaked.
Josh knew everyone reacted differently to this kind of news. Some people screamed at the doctors, clutching their scrubs in their shaking hands shouting that " it is all your fault", others sank to their knees, but josh just stood.
His neon hair was matted and stringy, his warm eyes turned cold and hard, they had become hardened soldiers in the face of grief. Puffy bags sagged under his tired eyes, his constant smile replaced by soft drooping lips.
His shirt was wrinkled, and one of the white laces of his black vans was untied.
"I-is it ok if I just sit with him..." Josh's voice trailed off into despairing silence.
The impatient nurse's face softened slightly.
"Sure hun, just don't touch anything please." She left with a swirl of blue, leaving the trailing sent of hand sanitizer behind her.
Once she had gone, josh ran to Tyler's side.
He lifted one of Tyler's hands into his own warm gentle ones.
It was cold, so very cold, its soft skin stretched over the sharp angles of Tyler's bones.
Josh ran his thumb back and forth across the curve of Tyler's hand, stroking his forehead with the other.
It suddenly came to him that he wasn't the only one in Tyler's life.
He knew he only had it in him to make one call: to Tyler's mother.
He sluggishly tapped her number in, then sat silently in the visiting chair next to Tyler as the constant ringing of the phone echoed through his head.

"Hello... josh? Is that you honey?"

"I-It's josh."

"What's wrong josh, is everything ok."

"No. No it's really not ok. Not ok. Not ok. Not ok. Not ok...."

"Tell me what happened!"

"It's Tyler..."

"Tyler... h-he...tried to kill himself, he's in the h-hospital, please come, please come. Please"

The last thing josh heard before Tyler's mother hung up suddenly were the sounds of broken sobs of a mother who has done everything, but somehow not enough to protect what she valued most.
