Josh:
Josh could hear the various noises coming from behind the closed hospital room door. There was the low voice of the doctor, punctuated by the higher squeaky voice of his intern. The beeping of the heart monitor. The slight sigh of the ventilator. The click of the air conditioner as it turned on and off in cycles.
In the hallway josh sat on the edge of a pale blue chair. It was stiff and uncomfortable, but that didn't really matter because he was stiffer and more uncomfortable. He rested his cheeks in his hands and the weight of his head pushed his elbows into his knees.
He had reached a new peak of anxiety. josh had been told on many occasions by many people that if he just "breathed" his panic would decrease. He concentrated on his breathing, but he concentrated so hard he forgot how to breathe and had to think about the appropriate length of breathing in, and the length of breathing out, and how long to wait before breathing again.
He was so distracted he didn't notice when the voices stopped behind the door.
