They had been on the road for a couple hours when Rebecca's cell phone rang, she looked at it and smiled before answering "Hey Mom! How are you feeling?" Olivia said "Not as sleepy but i'm still hurting. The doctor says it will be longer before I get to come home. Did you figure out the physical therapy?" Rebecca assured her mother that everything was taken care of and asked "When is the doctor saying you can leave? Why is he wanting you to stay longer?" Olivia sighed and said "He says he's worried about infection. I started running a low grade fever last night and they did some blood work a little while ago. He's watching me for more signs of infection while waiting on the results."
Rebecca frowned and said "Call me as soon as he gives you the results Mom. An infection this early is not a good sign and will probably have to be treated with IV antibiotics. If you have to stay for treatment we can move appointments, that isn't a big deal." Her mom agreed to call as soon as the doctor gave her any news and they said their goodbyes. Rebecca turned to Kyle and said "The doctor thinks Mom has the start of an infection and did some blood work to check. She may be in the hospital a while longer than we thought."
Kyle squeezed her hand and said "We will go see her tomorrow Baby. We should be home late tonight or early tomorrow morning. Then you can talk to the doctor yourself and see just what he's worried about." She smiled over at him and said "I will sneak a look at her chart while were there." He started laughing because he already knew she would be doing that. Rebecca leaned forward and started messing with the radio until she found a country station. She started singing along with the radio while Kyle drove.
They drove for another three hours before stopping for lunch. Kyle and Rebecca both found it a wonder that they never ran out of things to say, even when they were quiet it was a peaceful kind of quiet. They found a little roadside diner with a gas station next to it and decided to stop there. When they entered they both laughed at the decor, it was decorated with all kinds of old records, music posters and memorabilia of country artist. Once they were seated they noticed even the menu items were named to match, like the honky tonk hamburger which Kyle ordered.
They waitress was friendly but flirty towards Kyle. She didn't take it to far but Rebecca noticed and Kyle seemed to ignore it. After they were finished with their meal the waitress gave the bill to Kyle, when he looked down there was a little note at the bottom which said 'call me sometime handsome.' and gave her phone number. Kyle shook his head and said "Sorry Baby I can't let this slide. She's disrespecting you and that's not okay with me." Rebecca saw the note and said "That's awful. I understand your need to say something. She doesn't have a clue weather were dating, friends or married and is still trying."
Kyle waved for the waitress to come back and asked for the owner or manager. Once the owner came out he explained the situation to her and could she wasn't happy. She signaled the waitress over and pointed out that this type of thing was not okay. Kyle said "You don't know our relationship, if were friends or even married. Yet you think it's okay to disrespect her by trying this. First off a real man would never call someone who tries to steal him from someone else. Second and most importantly you see this beautiful woman across from me? She's an amazing, wonderful and sweet woman who i'm lucky enough to get to call mine. If that luck holds one day she will be my wife. You owe her an apology and every other woman you've done this to."
The waitress stood with her mouth open and looking like a deer in the headlights. She nodded and whispered she was sorry to Rebecca before heading into the back. The owner said "Please allow me to take care of your meal for you, this should never have happened. We're a family diner and homewreckers aren't a part of that environment." Kyle smiled at the owner and said "No Thank You Ma'am. I will gladly pay our bill. No reason for your business to suffer, the food was wonderful and we love the decorations. Thank You for the offer though." The owner nodded and took care of ringing them up.
Kyle put his hands on Rebecca's waist and lead her out the door and back to the truck. She pulled him to her and said "Cowboy do you know what that means to me?" He said "I was just stating fact Darlin'. I am lucky to call you mine." She kissed him softly and whispered in his ear "I'm lucky to be yours Kyle."
