Kyle said " Greg & Katie's mom is a physical therapist. We can call her tonight and find a good local one if her schedule is full. The guest house is wheelchair accessible and she would be close to the hospital. I take it Alice will have to go back to work soon?" Rebecca smiled and said "Actually she works from home. So she can stay with Mom when I go back to work." He said "Well the guest house is a 3 bedroom, so it has plenty of room. Not that i'm telling you that you have to move out to the guest house. It's totally up to you, but I like having you right there in the house with me. I understand if you think it's too soon though."
Rebecca smiled and said "I think it's not a good example for your two very young sisters. Atleast this quickly. So I might just have to sneak in after they are in bed to see you." He started laughing and said "We will work it out. I know you will have to make a trip to set up getting all your stuff shipped soon. You could just have it sent here, what you think you won't need well put in one of the sheds. Or if it makes you more comfortable we'll get you a building in town. Either way that way you have stuff here with you."
She said "I'll call the moving companies up there and see how much notice they need. I may be able to fly up there and fly back that night or the next day." He grinned knowing he had no intention of letting her go alone and said "We'll figure it out. So when are they moving your mom upstairs?" She said "They said she will move to the ICU step down unit probably in the next 20 minutes. Alice will come out when they move her, which should be any time now." Kyle said "Good after they do and you get to see her and give her the stuff we got her, why don't I take you back to the ranch and you can get some rest?"
She said "I'm fine Cowboy. Though going back to the ranch sounds good. I don't know that Alice will be ready to leave." He said "If she's not then we can send Greg back for her later. I'm sure he won't mind at all." Rebecca started laughing just as Alice walked out to let them know they were moving Olivia. She said "Mom said we need to go home and not hover over her." Rebecca started laughing and said "Tough luck for her! We're going to at least deliver this stuff and I want to read her chart. Then we can go back to the ranch."
They made their way to her room and she thanked them for the gifts. When Rebecca grabbed her chart her mom said "Rebecca you are not my nurse. You aren't suppose to read that." Rebecca laughed and said "I'll be a nurse here soon enough Momma. Now hush and let me read!" Olivia said "What do you mean?" Rebecca said "I applied on the children's floor here, they said I should start in a couple weeks. I'm moving closer." Olivia looked confused but happy and Rebecca said "Don't think about it so much we will go over things when you are less fuzzy headed." Rebecca was replying distractedly as she read and Kyle knew something was off.
After they said their goodbye and Rebecca made sure the hospital staff would call her with any changes, they headed for the truck. Once they were inside Kyle said "Okay tell me what you didn't like in her chart." Rebecca smiled and said "The surgeon notated that by the way the fall was described there shouldn't have been this amount of damage. He suggested doing a test for brittle bones. When you either don't take in enough or take in too much calcium your bones can start to honeycomb causing them to become brittle. Which in turn makes them break easily. There are treatments to reverse the damage but they are painful daily shots."
Alice said "What will that mean for recovery?" Rebecca said "It could slow down her healing time, depending how bad it is she could not be able to walk again Al. It just all depends what the tests show. Let's not borrow trouble, and just focus on getting her home with us." Alice nodded her head and said "At least one of us can work from home and always be there. And you usually only work what 4 days a week?" Rebecca said "Yeah they are usually 12 hour shifts 4 days a week but with them being understaffed here i'm not sure what they are working."
Kyle said "There are plenty of people to count on and no matter what we will help. That's what we do here." Little did Kyle know how true that statement would be and how much they would rely on that in the coming days.
