The next day

Nick's POV

As I was walking into school, I saw Katherine, Daniel and Joe and went over. 'Hey guys.'

'Hi Nick.' Joe nodded.

'Hey.' Katherine nodded too.  Daniel didn't say anything.

'So, did you all have a good evening?' I asked.

'Yes, just fantastic.' Katherine said sarcastically. Daniel looked at the floor with a guilty expression.

'Erm, did I miss something?' I frowned.

'Let's just say I'm going to fail science, thanks to someone.' She looked pointedly at Daniel.

'A C+ is hardly a fail.' Joe pointed out.

'What happened?' I asked.

'Divvy Daniel there, accidentally deleted my science project last night!' Katherine explained. 'We've just been in to see Mr Varner to explain, and he's done nothing about it. All he said was "I guess you'll just have to start again Katherine".' She glared at Daniel. 'That project took ages to do, and now I've only got a matter of weeks to do it all over again!'

'I've said I'm sorry!' Daniel said.

'I'll help you with it if you want.' I offered. 'I'm done with mine, so I can help you with yours if you like.'

'Thanks, but no thanks. I can handle it on my own perfectly.' She said stubbornly.

'Are you sure? Only, you seem to be worrying that you won't get it done before the deadline.' I grinned.

She crossed her arms. 'No. I'm fine.'

'C'mon K, think of it as compensation for Daniel's stupidity.' I argued.

'Fine, fine.' She relented. 'I suppose I could do with the help.'

'Awesome.' I beamed. 'I'll come over to yours tonight then?'

'Okay.' She agreed. 'Oh, and Nick?'

'Yeah?'

'Call me K again and I'll castrate you. Only my best friends call me that.'

'Sorry.' I stifled a laugh. I turned to go to English.

'Nick?'

I turned around again. 'Yes, Katherine?'

'Thanks.' She smiled. 'For helping me out.'

'You're welcome.' I nodded awkwardly. 'Seeya.' I waved and headed to English.

After School

I followed Katherine into the kitchen where her laptop was.

'I spent all morning trying to recover my project, but I couldn't.' She explained. She powered her laptop up and opened up a blank PowerPoint.

'Right.' I sat in a chair next to her. 'What was your colour scheme?'

'Colour scheme?' She frowned at me. 'I didn't use one. Or any design for that matter.'

I sighed and shook my head. 'No, no, no. Katherine, if you want to make a project interesting, you've got to make it eye-catching and appeal to your audience. Right, why don't we do a blue and yellow colour scheme to represent speed, since this is about catalysts which speed up reactions?'

'Okay.' She looked impressed. 'You're so good at this sort of thing.'

'Let's just say my B+ in art helped.' I grinned. 'I'll sort out the design for the PowerPoint. Do you want to make a list of what you remember you included in it? Then we could make a start on it.'

Ten minutes later

'Jeez Katherine, how long is that list?' I stared at it in disbelief.

'Trust me, that's only over half of my PowerPoint.' She said seriously.

'Bloody hell, you'll make Mr Varner fall asleep!' I teased. 'Maybe we should narrow the list down a bit and just use a few things.'

'Okay, okay.' She nodded and I got down to helping her cross things off the list that weren't so relevant.

'Thanks for helping me out Nick.' She said as we were finishing up. We'd made a good start on the project and I had a feeling we'd be finished in a week.

'You're welcome Kath.' I smiled. 'I can call you that, can't I?'

'Fine.' She looked amused. 'But not K. Only Katherine or Kath.'

'Sure.' I chuckled. 'See you on Monday Kath.'
