'So Nick, how's Rebecca?' Daniel asked after science as we made our way to the canteen.

He just shrugged. 'We broke up.'

I stopped. 'What happened?'

'Well technically, I broke up with her. This morning. I just don't have feelings for her anymore.' He explained. 'She's cool with being just friends.'

'Ah well mate. Plenty more fish in the sea.' Daniel slapped him on the back.

Nick looked at me for a second, but I quickly looked away.
Could I really trust Nick not to break my heart after Hoffman had hurt me?

We entered the canteen and were about to go to our usual table in the corner, but then I saw Hoffman and his friends at the table near ours.
'No, let's go somewhere else!' I said quickly.

Nick saw Hoffman and quickly understood. He steered us towards a table at the other side of the room.
I sat next to Nick and Daniel and Joe sat opposite us.
Nick went to get some food whilst me and the other two started discussing his breakup.
'So, what do you think happened with those two?' Joe asked, referring to Nick and Rebecca.

'Maybe she stabbed him with a pencil?' Danny joked. 'Nah, I don't know. But it's obvious that something happened.'

'Or maybe Nick told her the truth that he didn't have any feelings for her.' I shrugged. 'Nothing complicated at all.'

'Anyway, what happened with you and Hoffman?' Daniel asked. 'Nick said something happened but he refused to tell us, just told us that you'd tell us in your own time.'

'And he was right; I'd rather not talk about it.' I shrugged again.

'Was it bad?' Joe asked sympathetically.

I glared at him. 'I don't want your pity!'

'Hey, sorry. I'm only trying to be a good friend!' He held up his hands in defence.

'For your information, yes, it was bad.' I snapped.

'What happened?' He carried on.

I sighed. 'You don't give up, do you? He cheated on me with Jessica. When I confronted him, he acted like it wasn't a big deal.' I said wearily. 'Then when I went to tell Jess what he was really like, he threatened me that he'd tell people I paid him to have sex with me.'

'You what?!' Daniel looked thunderous. 'I'm gonna fucking kill the bastard!'
He stood up but suddenly Nick was there, stopping him from going anywhere. 'Daniel, don't.' Nick said quietly.

'What?' Daniel objected, still looking pissed off. 'I thought you'd understand, being Katherine's other best friend, and all that-'

'Oh, trust me, I do.' Nick interrupted, glaring. 'Believe me, I'd love to kill the bastard just as much as you do. But you're forgetting that there's teacher's around. Do you want to get suspended? And Katherine doesn't want the hassle, do you?' He looked at me.

'No, I don't.' I agreed. 'It's best you just leave him alone.' However, I did feel touched that my friends were sticking up for me.

'Fine.' Daniel sat down reluctantly. 'But, I swear, if he does anything else, I'll do something I won't regret.' He looked over at Hoffman and his friends who were all looking over at us with amused expressions.
Except Natalie. She was looking directly at me, but I couldn't read her expression. I ignored her.

Nick collected his tray of food and sat next to me. He got a chocolate cupcake from it and passed it to me. 'For my best friend.' He smiled.

'Thank you.' I smiled back. He hadn't gone out of his way to do something nice like this before. But I obviously knew the real reason now.

'Aw, why haven't I got a cupcake?' Daniel complained.

'Because Katherine's my favourite.' Nick answered.

'Not fair.' Danny said.
I just laughed.

'Erm, Katherine?'

I looked up. It was Natalie.

'Yes?' I said, not in the mood for any aggravation.

'I just want to say that I'm really sorry about what happened with you and Hoffman.' She said.

'Don't feel sorry for me, I don't want your sympathy.' I glared at her.

'I- I'm not trying to be sympathetic.' She stuttered. 'I mean, I'm not saying that what Hoffman did was okay, because it wasn't. But I was hoping we could still be friends. And if I could hang out with you guys.'

'What about your group?' I asked.

'Oh, like I'm gonna hang out with them anymore.' She said sarcastically. 'It's full of dickhead's and fake bitches. I've had enough of them.'

I hesitated.

'I don't want us to fall out because of Hoffman.' She continued. 'Can we still be friends?'

Ah what the hell? Natalie hadn't done anything. She was innocent in all of this.
'Yeah, you can hang out with us.' I smiled. 'And yes, we can still be friends.'

She smiled and hugged me. 'I'm glad you don't hate me. I thought you did.'

'Nah, you've done nothing.' I laughed. She sat next to me.

'Erm, what's Hoffman said about me?' I asked. I needed to know if he'd been spreading lies.

She looked confused. 'Nothing, why? Well not nothing exactly, just that you two broke up and called you a load of names. But that's all. Why?'

I lowered my voice so that nobody around us could eavesdrop. 'I told him I'd tell Jess what he was really like and he threatened me that he'd tell people I paid him to have sex with him.'
Nick growled under his breath.

'Not that I did.' I added.

Natalie shook her head. 'I believe you. It's just like him to do a shitty thing like that. But no, he hasn't said anything. Probably because he knows you didn't say anything to Jess.'

'Wow, so honest.' I said sarcastically.
She laughed.

4 hours later
Rebecca's POV

I was in town shopping, when I saw Katherine. She had her bag with her, so I guessed she was on her way back from college.
I narrowed my eyes. What if she had something to do with my breakup with Nick?
I walked over to her. 'Hey, Katherine!'

She stopped and saw me. And smiled. 'Oh, hi Rebecca. You okay?'

'No, I'm not actually. Nick broke up with me this morning.' I said.

'Oh, I'm sorry to hear that.' She said sympathetically. But before she said that, I noticed a corner of her mouth lift up in a satisfied smirk before she feigned sympathy.
Oh, yes, I was wise to her games now. She wasn't as innocent as Nick thought she was.

'But he didn't give me a good reason.' I continued. 'To why he dumped me.'

'Maybe, because he didn't want to be with you?' She shrugged.

What a bitch.

I glared. 'Give me a good reason why it's got nothing to do with you.'

'Rebecca, why would you think that?' She frowned.

'You didn't like him being with me, did you?' I accused her.

'What are you talking about?' She asked, exasperated. 'I think you're imagining things Rebecca. I think you two were great together actually. I get that you're upset about Nick dumping you, but you can't go accusing people of stuff, just because you're insecure about yourself. I'm genuinely sorry about your breakup but I swear I had nothing to do with it. I didn't even know he would break up with you.'

The more I glared at her, the more I wanted to slap her. 'Oh, whatever.' I finally muttered and walked away.
