First date

Nick's POV

All week after college, I'd hung out with Rebecca and gotten to know her.
I'd realised that I needed to get over Katherine. She was obviously never going to see me the way I saw her so I needed to move on.

That's​ why I was going to ask Rebecca on a date.
Rebecca was kind, interesting and funny. I really was starting to like her. I mean, I didn't like her the way I liked Katherine, but I could see myself with Rebecca.
She really was nice and I was interested.
'Hey, guys, can I talk to you?' I asked Joe and Daniel as we entered the canteen. Katherine was collecting some work from Mr Varner so she would catch us up.
'Go ahead mate.' They nodded.

'I'm thinking of asking Rebecca on a date.' I started.

'Nice, go for it.' Daniel looked impressed. 'I would, she's hot.'

'Are you sure?' Joe asked. 'What about Katherine?'

'What about Katherine?' I asked casually.

'Well, I thought you liked her.'

'I did. Do. But I also like Rebecca. And Katherine doesn't date, remember?' I reminded him.

'Okay, who's prettier?' Joe asked.

'Katherine.' I said without hesitation.

'Who's kinder? Less irate? Less sarcastic?'

I was about to say Katherine, but then hesitated.
Daniel saw the indecision on my face. 'You see the problem.'

'Look, just go with whatever you feel.' Joe shrugged. 'And you're right, Katherine doesn't date.' 

'You know what, fuck it, I'll ask Rebecca out after college.'

After college

I nervously dialled Rebecca's number and waited.
She answered. 'Hey Nick.'

'Erm, hi Rebecca, listen, I called because I wanted to ask you a question.' I started sweating.

'Sure, shoot.'

'Do you want to go out with me tomorrow night? Like, on a date?' I asked.
Dammit Nick, why is your voice shaking??!

'Sure, I'd like that.' She said. 'Yeah, cool. But we can't stay out late, I've got college the next morning.'

'Yeah, of course, me too. Erm, thanks Rebecca. See you tomorrow.'

'See you tomorrow Nick.' She said and hung up.

Yes! I grinned. I did it!
I messaged Joe and Daniel the same message:
I just asked Rebecca out. And she said yes! We're going out tomorrow night! Anyway better go, I'm gonna book a table at that Italian place for tomorrow 😎✌🍷🍴

The next day

Katherine's POV

We were all walking home together when Nick suddenly had to rush off.
'Sorry guys, I've got to get ready for tonight.' He said.

'Why, what are you doing tonight?' I asked.

'Nick's going on a date with Rebecca.' Daniel piped up. 'Lucky bastard.'

What??

Nick carried on. 'Yeah, I do. Anyway got to go. Bye!' Then he rushed off.

How could Nick do this to me? I mean, fair enough, he didn't know how I felt about him, but he'd hung out with Rebecca all week. And now he was going on a date with her??!

I noticed it had gone quiet. Joe and Daniel were both looking at me in concern.
'Are you alright K?' Joe asked. He was looking at me as if he understood.
But I was too pissed off right now to deal with any sympathy.
'Yeah fine.' I said bitterly. 'By the way, you two know any parties going on tonight?'

If Nick was going out, so was I.
