1 week later

Rebecca's POV

I can't believe Nick.
How could he?
That Peterson was offering us help, a chance to save our son, but Nick decided to refuse!
Just because the treatment is untested!

During the week, we'd had another scan and it showed that Will was deteriorating slowly.

We had to do something.

I got out of bed the next morning and I was about to go downstairs when a small piece of card fell off the bed.
Out of curiosity and picked it up and read the small lettering:

Professor Peterson:

(Number)

I stared at it for a long while.

'Rebecca, you up yet?' Nick called up the stairs.

'Erm... Yeah, one second!' I shouted back, trying to keep my voice steady. I looked down at the card again.

Fuck it.

I picked up my phone and dialled the number.
Within seconds, Peterson answered. 'Hello?'

'Erm, Professor Peterson, it's Rebecca. We met last week?'

'Oh, hi Rebecca. What can I do for you?' He asked.

'Erm... Well remember your offer to help us? Well, I was wondering if your offer still stands.' I said.

'Of course it does.'

'Great.' I said, happier now. 'Can we arrange a time to meet so we can talk properly?'

'Yeah sure.' He agreed.

'Just one thing though.' I said delicately.

'Yeah, go ahead.'

'Nick doesn't need to know about this, okay?' I lowered my voice.

The next day

I put my jacket on and went into the living room. Nick was watching TV.
I sat next to him. 'Niiick?' I said innocently.

He turned. 'Yeah?'

'Could you help me put my boots on?' I said sweetly. 'I can't..' I gestured to my huge bump that was basically getting in the way.

He chuckled. 'Sure.' He got my leather boots from the hallway and started with the right one. 'Where are you going anyway?'

I thought fast. 'Erm, just Hayley's house. You know, my new friend, who lives in town?'

'Oh, yeah. Have fun.' He finished putting on my left shoe. 'How long will you be?'

'I'm not sure.' I shrugged nonchalantly. 'Maybe a few hours at the most.'

'Okay. Bye, love you.' He kissed me before I left, and I tried to ignore the feeling of guilt that I was deliberately deceiving him. But if it saved our son, he couldn't complain.

'Okay, this treatment is going to last for 2 months and it's going to be a total of 12 injections of nanobots.' Peterson explained.

'Okay.' I nodded.

'So this is the first injection.' He took the first syringe (specially designed for nanobots). 'Are you sure you want to do this?'

'Yes, definitely.' I nodded. 'Do it.'

He injected the first lot of nanos and I winced at the slight pain.

'There, all done.' He said.

I rolled down my shirt sleeve.

No going back now.

2 months later

Me and Nick walked out of the hospital in a great mood. 'Well that went well.' Nick grinned.

'Yep.' I smiled back. This scan had shown that the baby was fine, his blood condition had, not exactly cured, but was managed.
He was going to be fine.

My last visit to Peterson was last week and since then, I felt different. Better, somehow.
Plus, the baby had started kicking again, so he was fine too.

I still felt guilty for lying to Nick, but it didn't matter now. Will was okay now.

Nick didn't need to know.
