Halloween

Nick's POV

I walked into Maths the next day and sat down next to Katherine. Joe and Daniel were sat directly behind us.

It was weird. Since I "officially" became Katherine's new best friend a week ago, I hung out with the group everyday and we sort of all became a gang. I'd join them for lunch without having to ask, and they included me in everything.

I have to say, it made a nice change from sitting in the library reading Physics books on my own.

'Hey Nick.' Joe, Daniel and Katherine said at the same time. We all stared at each-other for a second and then burst out laughing.

'Hi guys.' I chuckled. 'That was a bit weird.'

'Okay class, today we're working on pages 87 - 90.' The disinterested teacher, Mr Walker said. I turned my chair around and put my book on Daniel and Joe's table so that I could talk to them. Katherine did the same. 'Take notes and answer questions on pages 91 - 105. Do it in pairs, individually or in groups, I really don't care.'

This is one of those classes where you have to teach yourself everything.

'So... Nick, can you help me?' Joe asked.

'Really? Okay, fine.' I shook my head. 'What do you need help with?'

'All of it!' He exclaimed. 'It's total gibberish to me.'

'Are you sure you're not a starfish Joe?' I muttered.

'What?' He looked puzzled.

'A starfish Joe. You know, the sea creature. They don't have brains.' I spoke very slowly deliberately, as if I was talking to a five year old.

'Oh, very funny.' He retorted. 'Hey, hey, Daniel, how do you spell asshole?'

'I don't know Joe, how do you spell it?' Daniel answered, grinning.

'N-I-C-K.' Joe chuckled.

'Oh yes, very original Joe.' I rolled my eyes.

'Jeez guys, you're like a group of little girls, are you gonna get some work done today? Or just sit there giggling?' Katherine interrupted.

'Katherine, you're so boring!' Joe whined. 'We were only having a laugh!'

'Yes, well some of us care about our education more.' She shrugged.

'Katherine's just jealous that we're more fun than her.' Daniel stage-whispered to us.

'I am not jealous!' Katherine said loudly, causing a few people in the class to look up including the oblivious teacher.

'Care to enlighten us what it is you're not jealous of Miss Calvin?' He asked Katherine.

Katherine's eyes narrowed. I had a feeling that she was going to say something sarcastic or offensive which would get her into huge trouble. She did lose her temper sometimes like this.

Daniel picked up on this and jumped in before Katherine could get herself into trouble. 'Oh we were just saying that Katherine is just jealous of us since we got the answer to a question that she didn't, but don't worry, we'll explain it to her.'

Mr Walker, already bored of the subject, went back to his computer.

'What the fuck Danny?' Katherine glared at Daniel.

'K, Daniel just saved your ass. You can't get suspended again and we all saw it coming if Daniel hadn't jumped in.' Joe logically pointed out.

'You could have at least thought of a better excuse. One more believable. We all know I'm way smarter than you fucktards.' She said.

'SO, are either one of you gonna get some work done then?' I interrupted, before they could argue back.

'Screw that. Let's talk about Halloween!' Joe said.

'What about Halloween?' I asked.

Daniel looked at me like I'd just asked him where babies come from. 'It's this friday.'

'And?'

'Do you have plans?' Joe asked.

'Erm, not really, no. Probably just gonna watch a movie or catch up on some homework.'

'No you're not.' Joe stated.

'I'm not?'

'Nope because you're going to Daniel's party.' He said triumphantly.

'Ehh, I'm fine.' I refused.

'Oh, c'mon!' Daniel complained. 'Katherine the anti-social recluse never comes, but you are!' Katherine glared at him as he said this.

'Fine.' I relented. 'I suppose it might be fun. You coming too K?'

Katherine looked up from her work. 'Me? Oh please!' She scoffed.

'Oh, c'mon! You never go to any parties!' Joe tried to persuade her. 'You might actually have some fun.'

'I'd rather stick pins in my eyes.' She responded. 'Now, if that's all, I'd like to get some work done.'
