Katherine's POV

'Katherine! Up! It's your first day back at college!' Mum shouted up the stairs.

'I'm already up mum, jeez!' I shouted back. I quickly applied my lip gloss and picked up my bag. I made sure my keys, phone, purse and books were in there before I went downstairs. Mum was in the kitchen, making omelettes. She saw me enter. 'Morning? Want one?'

'No thanks mum.'

She tutted. 'You could do with the protein. How long have you been up?'

'Erm, nearly two hours I think.' I told her.

'Someone's keen to get to college.' She mused. I rolled my eyes in response. 'Seen someone you like?'

I sighed. 'No, I have not seen someone I like. You know I don't date mum. I'm more interested in getting through college.'

'I'm surprised nobody's asked you out yet. With your pretty face. Ah well, maybe you should wait til after uni to start looking.' She said.

'No thanks mum. Honestly, I hate guys.' I argued.

I soon arrived at college and the people I spotted were Daniel and Joe, my two best friends. We were all in the same classes. They were really into business, so they helped me with the business course I was taking, and in return, I helped them with science.

'Katherine!!' Daniel yelled, grinning. He ran over and hugged me.

'Hey Danny.' I used his favourite nickname. 'Hey Joe.' I said to Joe who had joined us both.

'Hey K-bear.' That was Joe and Daniel's nickname for me, because apparently on the outside I was all cute and innocent looking but once you messed with me, I was vicious like a koala.

We all began walking towards the science block. 'K, you should have been at Adam's party on Saturday!' Joe grinned. 'It was fucking crazy! Daniel jumped off the roof and into the pool; nearly broke his leg in the process.' Daniel laughed at the memory.

'You always seem to do stupid shit when you're drunk, don't you?' I shook my head in amusement. They were always doing crazy things like that.

'Hey, in alcohol's defence, I've done some pretty stupid shit sober as well.' He chuckled. 'It's not fair, you never come to any parties we go to, and then you miss out!'

'Dan, parties are not my scene, you know this!'  I said.

'You anti-social nerd.' Joe shook his head. 'So, what did you do on Saturday?'

'Oh, not much.' I shrugged. 'Studied, ate pizza, watched some movies.'

'Wow, highlight of the week!' Daniel said sarcastically.

'Shut up.' I glared at him as we entered the science room. Daniel and Joe went to their seats near the back while I headed to the front of the room. I wasn't allowed to sit with my friends because last time I sat with them, they started an elastic band war and we all got a detention, including me, even though I hadn't done anything. The teacher, Mr Varner knew I was a good student though and thought that Joe and Daniel were bad influences.

I was about to go to my seat when Jessica, a girl in my science class moved into my path between the two tables to talk to her best friend, Natalie. I sighed in irritation.

'What?' She narrowed her eyes at me. 'Got a problem?'

'Yes, you're in my way.' I retorted.

'Too bad.' She smirked. 'A simple "excuse me please" would have sufficed.'

'Oh, I'm sorry, my manners seem to have gone AWOL with yours!' I said sarcastically.

'Bitch, who do you think you're talking to?' She glared at me.

'Just get out of my way, I don't have time for this.' I sighed.

'Hmm, no.' She smirked again and I fought the urge to slap her. 'By the way, your outfit looks cheap.'

I glanced down at my outfit. I was wearing some black skinny jeans, a sleeveless lace white button up top and white flat shoes. What was wrong with it? However I felt my confidence shrivel up. I kept my head down as I walked the long way around to my seat instead.

However just as I reached my seat, someone accidentally collided with me, making my books drop out of my arms. 'I am so sorry!' The dark haired asshole apologised as my books tumbled to the floor.

'Whatever.' I sighed and picked them up. 'Next time, look where you're going.'

'I am, really sorry.' He looked genuinely concerned. 'Are you alright?'

'Yeah, I'm, erm, fine thanks.' I wondered why he was so bothered about it anyway.

'I'm Nick. Nick Clarke.' He said.

'Katherine.' I replied. I randomly wondered why I'd never noticed him in this class before.

'Oh, you're friends with Daniel and Joe, right?' He asked.

'Yes.' I nodded.

'Thought I recognised you.' He said. 'Saw the video of Daniel jumping off Adam's roof into the pool on Saturday. He's so crazy.' He mused.

'Yep.' I muttered.

'How was the party?'

'Oh, I didn't go.' I said.

'Why not?' He asked.

He was so nosy. 'I don't do parties. Daniel calls me an anti-social recluse because of it.'

'Me neither.' He agreed. 'I'd much rather stay at home and study string theory. And I genuinely mean that.'

'Hmm, right.' I felt stupid at my idiotic response. 'Well, if I can get in my seat now...' I hinted; he was standing in my way.

'Oh, yeah, sorry. Of course.' He moved out of the way. 'It was nice meeting you Katherine.'

'Likewise.' I muttered.

'See you later.' He moved to the middle of the room and took his seat. I put my books under my desk and sat down just as Mr Varner entered the room.
