Chapter 8

Derek and I sat in the school parking lot until school was over. Derek was really bored at that point and so was I considering I had listened in on a few science lectures and one history. "Well, at least he stayed all day." I said to Derek. He huffed.

Scott rushed out of the school. "Now Scott's leaving." I said sitting up. He was one his bike and the twins were following him. They got on their bikes. I listened in.

"Guys, I appreciate you wanting to protect me. But I have to be alone for a bit." Scott said as he backed up his motorcycle. "So... sorry about this." Scott starts his motorcycle. The twins try to but their engines don't seem to be working. I smirk. I knew Scott would get rid of them one way or another. Scott drove off. Derek and I follow at a distance.

The girl that was with Scott last night was waiting for him at a corner. Scott stops in front of her. She puts on a helmet and gets on the back of his bike. "What do I do with these?" She asks Scott. She tosses some parts as Scott drives off.

Scott and the girl goes to his house. Derek and I follow about a block behind them. I listen in once they get to the house.

"Could you lock the door?" Scott asks. "Yeah." The girl said. I hear the door close. She exhales deeply. "We're running out of time." She said. "I know but Alison and her dad and Isaac are working on something that could help." Scott said. She exhaled. I pulled out my phone to see if Alison texted me. Nothing.

"I don't want to sound pessimistic or anything, but you really think that's going to keep them out?" She asks worried. "Actually, we have a kind of security system. Things happened a couple of weeks ago, a lot of things, and we had my boss help make a few changes to our house." Scott said. I look at Derek confused. There was a lot of movement and clicking going on inside the house. Derek shrugs. What could Deaton have done?

"Your boss? Do you work for a security company or something?" She sounded hopeful. "No, he's a veterinarian." Scott said. I couldn't help but laugh. Scott's tone was really fun to me for some reason. "You had a vet put in your alarm?" She asked. She seemed alarmed. "Yeah, sort of. But I can't arm it. Only my mom can." Scott said. Only Scott's mom can? "Where's she?" The girl asked. "Don't worry. She'll be here." I heard them walking up the stairs. And a bang as Scott closed his window.

"Oh!" I heard Scott say. "Sorry." There were a few seconds of silence. I really wish I could see what was going on. This listening stuff is weird without being able to see. "We're going to be okay. I promise." Scott said. We are? "We? Or me?" She asked. I wish I knew her name. "All of us." Scott said positively.

"You didn't being the twins here because you didn't want them to get hurt. Right?" She asked. Or because they're annoying suck ups. "I don't want anyone getting hurt." Scott said. Unfortunately, that includes the twins. "Then why did you bring me?" She asked. That's a very good question. Why did he bring her? He didn't answer. She inhaled.

"If those things are coming after you, and anyone who gets in the way gets killed, then shouldn't I be somewhere else?" She asked. She seems to be taking this a lot better than I thought she would. "I'm not letting you get hurt." Scott said. Yes we know. "And I don't want you getting hurt. Especially because of me." She said. Because of her? "It could be either of us." Scott said. "I don't think so." She said. What is she talking about? "I have to show you something." I heard movement. I want to see! There was silence for a long time.

"Have you ever heard of something called a kitsune?" She asked. Derek made a noise. I looked at him. He shook his head. There was silence and more movement. "That looks like what happened to you at the power station." Scott said. What looks like what happened at where? I had been out of the loop too long.

"When a kitsune rubs it's tails together it can create fire or lightning. It's call foxfire." Derek exhaled. He knew something that I didn't. There was silence. "I don't have any tails." She said. Scott scoffs. "How'd you know what I was thinking?" He asked nervously. "Because kitsune are also psychic. I can hear all of your thoughts." What? There was a long silence. "Just kidding." She says quietly.

There was more silence. Did Scott forget how to talk? "The sun's setting." She said. I looked around. She was right. I had been so consumed with watching and listening that I forgot to watch the sun. "Ah. Yeah, I know." Scott said. More silence.

"Are you scared?" He asked. "Not right now." She said. There was silence. Does she like him? "I'm supposed to be back before dinner." She said. "Tell them you can't make it." Scott said quietly. Does he like here?

"What should I say?" She asked. "Say, uh, you're going on a date." Scott said softly. Yep, one of them likes the other. "Are you sure that's a good idea? You know, foxes and wolves don't really get along." She says. There was movement. "That's just a drawing. In a children's book." He whispers.

A car drove up to Scott's house. "Who is that?" I asked. Derek shook his head.

A man got out and went inside.

I heard footsteps from the inside. Scott and the girl must have gone down stairs.

"What are you doing here? And why do you still have a key?" Scott sounded angry. Whoever it was he didn't especially like. "Funny you mention keys. Because while I have a key to this house, I'm not exactly sure how you got a key to my office." The man said. Oh Lord. What did you do now? There was a long silence.

"Let me help you out here. This kind of thing usually begins with something along the lines of, "It's not what you think". Or, "I can explain"." The man said. Something's up with Scott. He must really not like this guy. "Dad, let me help you out. You need to leave."I turned to Derek. "Dad?" I whispered. He shook his head. Ms. McCall drove up to the house.

"I will. With a satisfactory explanation." Mr. McCall said. I rolled my eyes. "Go get a warrant." Scott said. "I don't need a warrant. I'm your father." Mr. McCall said. Yes, father. You're son is trying to save you. "No, you're a gene donor. I got my hair color from you. And that's all I got. So you're not allowed to play tough dad with me." Scott said. Ooo, maybe it's a little more than wanting to get daddy out of the house to keep him from being killed by demonic ninjas.

"Hey, what's going on?" Ms. McCall asks. "Maybe one of you should explain." Mr. McCall said. I suddenly realized t was getting dark. Really, really fast.

"Scott..." The girl said nervously. She was noticing it too. I heard a hissing sound near her. I shoved the door open and got out. I ran toward the house. I had been so persistent about listening that I forgot to make sure Derek and I got in the house before the ninjas. I could hear Derek following me. I ran up the steps of the front porch as I heard the girl scream.

I kicked in the door, knowing Scott had locked it. Derek slide in under my leg. I summer sailed in so I wouldn't hit Derek and landed in a crouch. I stood up quickly. Derek growled and then I roared. Derek stood up. The shadow creature pulled out a sword and Derek ran at it.

Scott turned and growled. The creature swung at Scott but he jumped back. He got under the creatures arm. "Mom, the ash!" Scott yelled. Mountain ash. How was I so stupid before? Scott kept dodging the creature.

A creature appeared behind the girl. I roared as a warning and she turned around. I ran at them. The demonic ninjas creature snarled at her. I heard glass breaking. Two bodies came crashing in the window. The creature raised it's sword. The twins had come in through the window. They growled in unison and stood up. I grabbed the girl and pulled her away.

The twins came at the creature and attacked it. I pushed the girl behind the island in the kitchen to keep her hidden.

I heard more glass breaking. "Mom, now! Do it now!" Scott yelled. I turned toward the living room. Derek was fighting one of the creatures. He grabbed it and shoved it out the front door. Ms, McCall ran after him and threw the bottle of ash down. It set itself as the bottle broke. I breathed a sigh of relief.

I turned to see the girl beside Aiden. She put her hand up and moved it toward the barrier wall. It pushed her hand back. I looked at her confused. She really is something supernatural.
