Chapter 24

"Okay." I said. This made no since to me. Why was everyone actin like that was a big deal? "Is that important?" I asked hesitantly.

"That queen is believed by most players to be the most important piece on the board. While others believe that the queen is no more important than other rook pieces or ordinary pieces. However some of the best players in the world believe that without a queen piece your as good as defeated." Stilinski explained. Great! This sounds just amazing.

"It's not a message from Stiles. It's a threat from the Nogitsune." Chris said. He was right. The board indicated that the two most important players were just one step way from being out I the game.

"He's at the loft. That's what he's trying to tell us." Alison said. I love how ingenious Alison can be at times. "And he wants us to come there." Chris said. Of course. It's getting late. "Night's falling." Derek pointed out.

"This couldn't sound any more like a trap." I was starting to wonder if I was the only one that remembered that we were dealing with a trickster. "I don't think it is." Sheriff said. I looked at him confused. Does he realize that his say in things would be questioned? "I think your opinion might be slightly biased, Sheriff." Chris said. If this was anyone else he wouldn't believe it. He would know this is a trap just like everyone else does.

"Hear me out. What we're dealing with here is basically someone who lacks motive. No rhyme, no reason, right?" Sheriff said. I think he's wrong on that one. "Meaning what? Our enemy is not a killer. It's a trickster. The killing is just a by-product." Sheriff said. That doesn't sound great but whatever. "If you're trying to say it won't kill us, I'm not feeling too confident about that." Derek said leaning a bit closer to me. But it hasn't physically killed anyone. "It won't. It wants irony. It wants to play a trick. It wants a joke. All we need to do is come up with a new punch line." Sheriff said. I had to say something.

"I'm sorry but I'm not convinced, Sheriff." He looked up at me. "To the outside person, I didn't have a reason. But in reality I did. I wanted more power. That's exactly what it wants but unlike me, it gets its power from strife, chaos and pain. That's what its after. But I do agree that killing is a by-product." I explained. I hadn't realize he was right about the last part until I said what I had.

"The sun is setting, Sheriff. What do you have in mind?" Chris said. The Sheriff looked down at the board.

I inhaled sharply as my vision went black and I grabbed Derek's arm just as I felt myself falling.

I heard bone breaking. Flies clouded my vision. An oni's sword was plunged into someone's abdomen. Claws went into someone's neck. Blood dripped on the ground. "It happened so fast." Someone whispered. Two swords connected. Lydia screamed. a knife broke. Someone's head connected with a flat surface. Someone ran down the school hallway. Gun shots fired. I was running in the woods, but I wasn't the only one. Black blood. Someone lit a lighter. Someone clasped on the floor. A gun pointed at my head and I heard the trigger being pulled. The gun let out an ear shattering bang.

I gasped and sat up. "Eva?" Derek's voice was laced with worry and alarm. I exhaled and closed my eyes. I was shaking and cold. I shivered. "I'm fine." I insisted immediately. When I opened my eyes I realized I had been laying in the back seat of Derek's car. Derek was driving and Chris was in the passenger seat.

"You did explain to everyone that I didn't faint for the heck of it, didn't you?" I asked Derek as I sat in the seat correctly. I rubbed my arm to flatten the goosebumps that rose on my body. "He did." Chris confirmed. I rubbed my temple to try to make the tingling sensation go away.

"It's the same isn't it?" Derek asked. There was an edge to his voice that I never liked to hear. I nodded. "They're going to die."

I rubbed my jaw in an attempt to make my teeth retract back to normal. My claws scrapped my cheek as I did so. In the window, I could see my eyes glowing the darkest blue I've ever seen them be. I glanced in the rear view mirror and almost panicked. My eyes looked darker because of the red flecks graced my irises.

I looked away before either of them noticed. Red flecks? I've never seen that before and I hope I never do again. As my entire body was going into panic mode, I wished that I didn't have these weird future in-sites.

I had told Derek that it was the same. They were going to die. But I left out the part where I was going down with them.
