Chapter 93
All of us were sitting and waiting for the attack. Nightfall was coming painfully slow. We all prayed that the dead pool would be cut off before then but deep down that's not what I wanted. I hadn't come this far to be cheated out of a good fight. After all, no matter how much I don't want to be, I'm still a crazy monster.
"You're the beta we've been hearing about, aren't you? The one that can kill alphas and not become one." Brett had snuck up beside me so quietly that I hadn't heard him. Or maybe I had been so deep in thought that I hadn't noticed. I smirked. "I guess that's me." I told him. Had word really spread about me that fast? "But I guess my luck's running out." I told him and showed him my bicolored eyes. He looked at me shocked and I could practically see the millions of questions forming behind his eyes. I shook my head. "Save the questions. Trust me, you probably know as much as I do." I told him. That was probably close to true. My ears perked up into a conversation.
"We... my kind, are violent creatures, who eventually will not be able to control their violent impulses. Take your niece for example. She succumbed to her impulses and look where it's gotten her. The mantra helps us subdue our nature." Satomi explained. Yes, I suppose everyone knew about that abomination. "But you're still violent creatures." Chris pointed out. "Aren't we all?" She said. I smirked. That we are. Chris's alarm beeped repeatedly sending alarm pulsing in the air between the people. "They're coming." Chris announced.
Something was thrown toward us and hit the floor with a clank. "Get back!" Braeden warns. We all scatter as far away as we can without any questions. Smoke comes out of the cans. Scott and Kira suddenly throw them selves on the ground as everyone scatters. Gun fire rang out. I duck and summer salt to the side, away from the gun fire. Chris fire his gun at them and Derek joined in. I run around them and I see them. They look like SWAT men.
I jumped on the one closest to me, snapping his neck before he could hit the ground. I bullet lodged itself in my back. I cried out in pain and hit the ground beside the dead man. Roaring and gun fire. That's all there was. This is the final battle of the dead pool. I can feel it. We're the majority of what's left on the list. Either we'll be the ones left standing, assassins dead at our feet; or we'll be laying dead.
I jumped up roaring and slash at the one closest to me. I missed as he turned his gun on me but I grab it and yanked it out of his hands. I slashed his throat opened. His eyes bore into mine as he died and fell to the ground. A bullet grazed my neck and I growled in pain. Footsteps were rushing toward me from behind. I kicked my leg up and slashed his throat with the claws on my feet.
I looked up to see one of them so close to me and didn't even see me. He was focused on his gun pointed at someone. I growled and lunged at him. I grabbed his gun and jumped on him. Both of us fell to the ground. I leaned in close to his face, gnashing my teeth at his neck. He tried with all he had in him to keep me away from his neck. I jerked up, yanking his gun out of his hand. I hit him in the head with it and he was unconscious.
I jumped up and looked around in the smoke. "How many are there?" I heard Derek yell. "Too many!" Braeden yelled. I saw them back to back shooting at anything in black gear. Movement a few yards away from the caught my eye. There was an assassin, well concealed in the smoke. His gun was trained on Braeden and from what I could tell, the shot would be lethal. I let out a savage roar and ran at him. He saw me just before I jumped on him. He turned and tried to shoot his gun at me but I was too fast. I collided with him and my teeth sunk in his neck. We hit the ground and I tore at his neck. Blood washed over my teeth and into my mouth and down my neck.
A bullet went through my hip. I jerked up and roared, angrily. I kicked up and twisted my body around, landing on my feet facing the shooter. I growled and ran at him. I pushed away his gun and threw him across the room. His body crashed through the wall and landed in the heap of rubble.
A bullet tore through my chest and I roared in pain. Something slammed down against the back of my knees and I collapsed, my knees smashing into the floor. Before I could react, something connected with the side of my head and I hit the ground. I turned to see an assassin hovering over me with gun pointed at my head. I'm dead. I'm about to die. It I move the wrong way he'll pull the trigger. Even if I get the chance to kill him the bullet will Then something happens. His body jerks and he falls on the ground. In his place stands Derek. He reached his hand out, offering it to me. I took it and he pulled me off the ground. Derek. Human or werewolf, lover or friend, he'll still protect me no matter what it means for him.
We looked around. "Get the others back and tell them to hide." Scott yelled in the commotion. "Kira! Kira!" He yelled and I spotted him. There was an assassin trailing him. I roared and ran at him. He saw me and turned toward me. But I didn't shy at the sight of the gun pointed at me. He fired at me again and again. I was shot twice before I jumped on him and hit the ground. My claws sunk into his chest, piercing his lungs.
I looked up and I saw her. An assassin had his gun pointed directly at her head. I could practically see the terror all around her. She didn't fight. She's so young. Too young to fight a war. Too young to have a price over her head. Just like I had been. Too young for this world. She closed her eyes and waited for death. My body moved before I could form a valid thought. I ran toward her as fast as I could. I jumped over bodies never taking my eyes off her. She couldn't die. She can't end this way. I jumped in front of her and wrapped my arms around her protectively. I can't let her die. Kill the monster, let the innocent live. She deserves it more than I do.
I heard roaring and lost of thudding behind us. I turned my head to see Scott attacking the assassin. I took the girl's hand and ran, keeping her close to me to be ready to shield her with my body. We ran through the smoky room that had filled with the overwhelmingly metallic smell of blood. I found Brett with the other members of Satomi's pack. She let go of me and ran toward him. He nodded in thanks. I turned and ran back into the fight.
I ran at and assassin. I jumped up and spun in the air, slashing his throat with my claws. When I landed I felt something tear through my skin. I roared in pain. I spun around and was confronted with the same pain across my face. I cried out and fell against the ground. A weight fell on me and I grabbed the assassin's arms just before his knife could go into my chest. He threw his weight against me and I felt the tip of the blade barley pierce my skin. I growled in his face.
Then something unexpected happened. I heard his phone vibrate. Actually, the room filled with the noise of vibrating phones. The gun fire died down and stopped completely. The assassin looked up. I twisted my head to see what he was looking at. The assassins were retreating and disappearing in the smoke. All of a sudden his weight against my hands were gone and the skin of my stomach was ripped open. I screamed and his weight was completely off me. He ran out with the other assassins.
I grabbed my stomach and felt a gaping gasp across it. I rolled over toward a dead assassin. Painfully, I reached over and dug through his pockets looking for his vibrating phone. I found it in his jacket pocket. There was a message on the screen.
BENEFACTOR: ALL CONTACTS TERMINATED.
I breathed a sigh of relief. They did it. Stiles, Malia, Lydia. They stopped the dead pool.
Scott and Kira came into view through the settling smoke, Derek and Braeden were close behind. I painfully got to my feet and joined them. Everyone gathered together with us. "Is it over? Really over?" Kira asked. Scott nodded once. It's really over. No price. No list. No money. It's over.
People began to scramble around, collecting each other. I headed toward the way I had come in, still holding t bleeding stomach.
"Eva." I heard Derek call after me. I turned around just as he got to me. "I was wrong." I looked at him confused. "You're not a monster, Eva. I saw what you did. You could have just as easily taken out the assassin than jump in front of that girl, but you didn't. Because in that second you didn't think about killing or the dead pool or assassins. All you cared about was her. You're not a monster. You're a predator with a past. That was something the old Eva would have done. You're not what you've done. I know that now." Derek told me. I gave him a small smile. He knew I knew he had thought I was a monster. He had believed it whole heartedly. It took that one action to prove I wasn't. But it had taken Parrish five seconds at most. I turned around and walked away. Leaving him behind me.
