Chapter 38

I woke up with little pain. There was no fuzzy vision that took a while to clear. That was a perk of more power, faster healing. But I'm not saying my head didn't hurt a little.

I sat up, holding my head. Stiles came over to check on me. I held up my hand and shook my head. "I'm fine." I said closing my eyes, trying to force the headache away. Trying to force myself to heal. Trying to force myself not to tear him apart. I love Stiles but for a split second I desperately wanted to rip him open.

"He's awake. Guys, he's awake." Kira called. Stiles helps me up off the floor. I clench my mouth shut when I get a little close to his neck. I let go and turn away abruptly. What the hell is wrong with me? This is Stiles were talking about. Other than being possessed by a dark fox spirit, which was totally of no fault of his own, he had never done anything wrong. He was an innocent and I wanted to kill him.

We all go over to Scott. I clench my fist in hopes of causing some pain. I could not have a freak out with this many people around. Not with these people around. "Scott, you okay?" Stiles asked. I suddenly swayed a little but Stiles stood close to me. He grabbed my wrist to help steady me. "Yeah." Scott said a little dazed as Stiles and Kira helped him sit up.

"They don't have Derek." I said suddenly remembering what I had realized before being hit in the head with a taser. "We know. But right now, they've got Lydia." Kira said. Lydia? I looked around. She wasn't with us. I swayed again. I closed my eyes to keep the dizziness away. "Lydia? What do they want with Lydia?" Scott said turning to Stiles. Stiles shook his head. "We don't know but we really need to get out of here." Stiles said.

I looked around. Yep, I knew it. We're going to end up dead. Everyone of us. Why hadn't I expressed my feelings before? It might had saved us from our impending death or possibly global disappearance.

A distantly familiar scent set off an alarm in my brain. I froze. It was old but still detectable, barley. Which means Scott and Malia can't smell it. Maybe it was just some sick part of my brain playing some trick on me. I shook it off.

Scott got up abruptly. He looked around frantically. He ran across the room to the... what I guess is a door. He pushes and pulls on it as we all watch. He grunts in the effort, desperate to get out. "We already looked for a way out. I think a lot of people have." Kira said as Scott looked at the claw marks by the door. My skin crawled and I shifted uncomfortably. There was something about this room that I didn't like. Something happened here. I can feel it. Or maybe I can smell it.

"I say when that door opens again, we take out whoever's standing in the way and run for it." Malia said leaning against a pillar. Some part of me, the part of me that was humming for the need to rip open something warm and bloody, liked that plan. Every man for himself. But the part of me that was worried about what they possibly might be doing to Lydia, hated it.

"What about Lydia?" Kira asked her. Huh. Two very different girls acting out my conflicting instincts. Great. It's like my conscious grew legs and are now battling it out. "What about her?" Malia asked confused. I narrowed my eyes. There was something different about her. "We're not leaving without her." Scott said walking toward us. It was more like an order. "Why not?" Malia was genially confused. Something was defiantly different about her. Stiles walked up beside her.

"Because we don't leave without people. Remember, we talked about this? Rules of the wild kingdom don't apply to friends." Stiles said. She slumped a little and looked down. Rules of the wild kingdom? Had she been like me and listened to a little too much to their animal instincts? "Is that what you would do as a coyote, leave her for dead?" Kira asked. So she was that girl I had heard about. The she was the one that had accidentally killed her family and spent eight years in a coyote body. "If she was weak and injured, yeah. If hunting has been bad that season, I would eat her." Malia said. Yeah, I guess in a way she had been listening to her animal instincts too much. The idea of eating Lydia made me feel weird. Kira nodded. "Then I'd leave." Malia finished. "Mmm. Believe it or not, that's progress." Stiles said. Oh. My. I suddenly had a new respect for Stiles. He was teaching this girl Human 101 and she had barley been human.

"All right, guys, we're not dead yet." Scott said. I raised an eyebrow. "Yet." I said looking at him. My whole getting killed theory popped into my head again. He gave me a warning look that was the equivalent to "shut up now". "That means Araya wants something." Scott continued. That's Araya? I had heard Derek mention her but I was in such a panicked state that I didn't ask anything at the time.

"But if the Calaveras don't know where Derek is, that means they didn't take him from the loft. Right?" Kira asked Scott. He might have been taken by the Calaveras and then escaped. But looking at the room we're in I doubt that. "Maybe he left on his own." Stiles said. I shook my head. "No, I was dying. He wouldn't have left me like that." I said. Stiles cocked his head. They all knew that. "Maybe someone else got to him." Scott said.

I was about to say something when the door opened. We all look toward it. Three hunters came at us. The two following the leader puts up their guns. The guy in the front pulls out his taser. Subconsciously, my instincts took over. I roared at them but before I could react the hunter with the taser hit me across the face with it. But I didn't black out this time. I snapped my attention back at him but not before he tasered me. Then I blacked out.
