Chapter 68

I got to the building just after Chris pulled up in his car. Scott was waiting there for us. Scott got off his bike and Chris got out of his car as I ran up to them. Chris looked at the building and then down.

"You've been here before?" Scott asked. I looked at Scott, trying to catch my breath. "I worked here. We used to own the building. It was part of our business." Chris explained. Scott looked back at us.

"We've fought these things before." Scott told him. The Berserkers. Chris looked at us. "They're strong." Scott said. I nodded. "Really strong." I added. "That's why I brought this." Chris said opening the back seat door. He reached in and pulled out a gun and closed the door. "I'm good with that." Scott said graciously. I smiled. "What you got for me?" I asked Chris, a bit too excited to have a gun in my hand again. He looked at me. "I figured you'd go straight for Kate. As long as you anger on your side, you don't need a gun." Chris told me confidently.

The three of us walked cautiously through plastic curtains and chairs and tables. Scott lead us through the mess. Something was eery around the plastic. The scent was getting stronger. Death and Kate and that scent. A scent that wasn't Kate or the Berserkers. It was distantly familiar, like I used to smell it all the time but I hadn't in a long time.

"You shouldn't have come." Kate's voice was loud. Almost too loud. Chris looked around. "Kate." Scott called into the abyss. "I'm here for Violet. I need to talk to her." Scott called. From the brief text, Chris had given me a forwarding that Violet was an assassin. I wasn't sure why we were trying to rescue her but I didn't care. It was a chance to fight Kate. That's all I cared about. Chris walked forward, leaving me and Scott no other choice but to follow him. "I knew you'd find me." Kate continued.

In front of us her shadow played largely on the plastic. Chris loaded his gun and pointed it at her. "I was hoping we could do this later. I just needed a little more time." Kate said. Time? The two Berserkers' shadows appeared on either side of her as her shadow got smaller. "For what?" I demanded. As I talked I felt my fangs scrape my lips. I was getting too angry too fast. "To learn control." She said. Control? Why would she want control? I saw her claws scrape against the plastic. I heard growling. She flipped the plastic away. My claws instinctively came out. "Lower the gun. We walk away. And you don't have to get hurt." Kate said walking toward us. I'm not planning on getting hurt. "Where's Violet?" Scott asked. I heard bone clanking together and growled without thinking.

"Put the gun down, Chris." Kate said. She was in full form. I could feel it. Smell it. Mixed in with that scent. The one I knew but couldn't place. "Where is she?" Scott asked. Everyone was getting a little anxious. I could feel it in the air. Chris's finger tightened on the trigger. Kate growled. "No, no." Scott said quietly as a warning.

The berserkers ran at us. Chris fired at them. "No, no, stop! No!" Scott yelled. The berserkers kept running no matter how many times they were hit. Chris yelled as he shot.

Kate came out of nowhere and hit Chris's hand. The gun flew the the side. She punched him and he fell back against the table behind him. The sight of her living sent me over. I let out a roared and jumped on her.

My force sent us both tumbling to the ground. I acted quickly and kicked at her face. I made impact and she fell back but I realized that it wasn't exactly what I want because I still had boots one and my claws had no effect. I twisted into a crouch as Kate righted herself. She moved before I could react. She lunged at me, both of us tumbling head over heels. She tried to sink her teeth into my neck but I move enough that she sunk her fangs into my collar bone. I let out a roar of pain. I dug my claws into her chest the pushed her off. I jumped into a crouch and stood up. She spun around. The sight of my blood on her lips made me crazy. I half roared, half yelled and ran at her. She ran at me and swung at me. I ducked and slashed across her stomach. I spun around and kicked her in the back. She stumbled forward and turned around. Before she could react I ran at her and slammed her against the top of a table. I saw blood around her head and felt the bloodlust creating back in. All I wanted was to be covered in her blood and have it spill everywhere. And have it drop off the table onto the floor. I roared savagely in her face. I sunk my teeth into her neck and tore at her. She let out a scream. She sunk her claws into my face and slashed at her. I yelped and stumbled back. She moved fast but I was too angry. I roared and sunk my claws into her stomach and shoved her back on the table.

I reached back, ready to rip her throat and end the bitch once and for all, when someone hit me in the head. The force knocked me over, away from Kate and onto the floor. I heard a gun cock and sung around. The barrel of the gun was point at me. I growl and push it away. I get up and rush at the person. Gun fire hit me and I fell to my knees as I cried out in pain. My rage was immediately replaced with pain. I look up to see the person that shot me. My heart stopped and I forgot how to breath. I knew him. A lot better than I thought I did. Frozen, I was powerless. All I could do was stare into his eyes. He pulled back and hit me in the head with his gun. I fell to the ground, my head cracking against the concrete.

"No!" Kate's yell echoed in my head. She roared. I heard someone fall and my eyes closed.
