Chapter 67
The three of us go in Derek's car. It was after dark by now. We'd been searching all day but had no luck. I had pointed out several times that it was Beacon Hills and there was every possibility the pack was invisible. Derek would always give me a disappointed look.
"I'm sorry." Malia apologized when we got in. "There's nothing to be sorry about. If they don't want to be found, then we're not going to find them. Some werewolves have an ability. A kind of mastery over their bodies where they can actually inhibit their scent." Derek explained. Why can't I do that? That's kind of like being invisible and that would be so cool! Malia looked at him with a weird expression. "They can hide from other werewolves?" Malia asked. Not just Wolves but other supernaturals too. That's like the ultimate hiding defense. It's great! "From anyone who's trying to find them." Derek said. Boy, do we all have someone to hide from. "So that's why nobody knew about Brett." Malia said understanding. "Same with Demarco." Derek added.
"Maybe we need to try something different." Malia said looking at Derek. "Maybe we need to think like Stiles." Malia said. "Like a hyperactive spaz?" Derek questioned. I leaned forward and wacked Derek in the head. Stiles came up with some good plans, thank you very much. "Like a detective. If they're really Buddhists, then maybe instead of asking where werewolves hide, we should be asking-" Malia started. "Where would Buddhists hide?" I finished. I have a feeling like this is a "Where's Waldo?" game. "When Buddha sat under bodhi tree, he looked to the east for enlightenment." Derek said. I looked at him weird. Derek really is crammed full of random knowledge. "Does the east have some sort of supernatural enlightenment power?" I asked confused. Hey, it's Beacon Hills. Anything could happen. "Is there some kind of eastern point in Beacon Hills?" Malia asked. "Yeah. At Lookout Point." Derek said. My phone vibrated. I pulled it out of my pocket. It was a text from Chris.
"Derek, you and Malia have to go. I have a fight with a bitch I have an axe to grind with." I said and opened the door. "Be careful." Derek told me. I looked at him weird. "You're not going to try to stop me?" I asked knowing that this is uncharacteristic of him. "I know I can't stop you." He said. My heart sank. He sounded sad almost. That's when I realized how much we had been fighting. Derek was losing his power, the power he had all his life. He didn't know how to be human. He never was human. Not like I was. And it scared him. I had been fighting with him when all he needed was me by his side.
"I'll be careful." I promised him. I jumped out the door and ran toward town.
