Chapter 59
"So, the Walcotts were the first. At least the first that we know about. Four murders. Sean, his brother and their parents. They were killed by a professional assassin called The Mute. Weapon of choice, a military tomahawk. But then the Mute was killed by Peter Hale after he tried to blow up Derek Hale and Eva Archer with a Claymore mine. Next was Demarco. He delivered a keg to the party at Lydia's lake house. And he got decapitated outside his car. And then last night, 23 year old Carrie Hudson." Stiles filled up in with the details of the past few days as we stood in his dad's office.
"It's a dead pool. A hit list of supernatural creatures." Scott said. He pulled out a piece of paper and unfolded it. Well most of it. It was still kind of folded in half. "This is only part of it. The rest still has to be decoded." Scott said putting the list on Stilinski's desk. It looked like the paper was folded for a specific reason considering that it wasn't in half. Lydia, Scott, Derek and Kira were all on it with different numbers on the end of their names.
"Who found this list?" Stilinski asked. Where did they find this list and how accessible is it, are my questions. If this is a hit lost, I, personally, would not want my name out there. "Lydia." Stiles said. Of course she did. "How?" Stilinski asked. Same way she finds everything else. "She wrote it. Actually, she transcribed it. Without realizing it." Stiles explained with a lot of hand movements. He was beginning to babel. "Banshee?" Stilinski asked. "Banshee." Stiles comfirmed. Stilinski nodded. "Beautiful." He murrmured. I smirked. Turns out father and son aren't that different after all.
"All right, what are these numbers next to the names?" Stilinski asked. That's what I want to know. Why is there a twenty five to the end of Scott's but Lydia has a twenty and Derek has a fifteen and Kira has a six? "We're getting to that. First, you need to know that the code was broken with a cipher key." Stiles said. A cipher key? "Wait. You mean, like a... like a key word?" I asked. Stiles and Scott exchanged a look that was unreadable. "It's actually a name." Stiles said. "Alison." Scott said. My chest contracted in pain. Would I ever be able to get over her dead?
"Her name broke a third of the list." Stiles explained. "And now we think there's two other cipher keys." Scott said. Two more. There had been so many more of us that had died. If that's even what the trend in the names are. We have a lot of names to choose from. "Which will give us the rest of the names." Stilinski said. Scott nodded. "Okay. So how do we get the cipher keys?" I asked. The sooner we know who's on the list, the sooner we know who's in danger. "Same way we got the code." Stiles said. "Lydia. She's been out at the lake house all weekend trying to find the other two key words." Scott said.
"You didn't know about Demarco or Carrie. Hmm?" Stilinski asked looking through the pictures. "And what about these other two names on the list? Uh, Kayleen Bettcher and Elias Town. They werewolves too?" Stilinski asked. Who knows? The Walcott's weren't. Kate's not. Not that she's on the list. "I don't know. But Deaton said that the Nemeton would draw supernatural creatures here." Scott said. I straightened up. "And apparently there are a lot more of those than we originally thought." I reminded them. Stiles looked a me a bit defeated. This was bad. Really bad. Personally, I would rather face the alpha pack again. "Here being Beacon Hills? Or Beacon County? The population of Beacon Hills is just under 30,000." Stilinski said. "And dropping." He added. Isn't that the truth? "But if we're talking Beacon County, then you're looking at close to 500,000. Look, how many werewolves, banshees, kitsune and whatever the hell else is out there are we talking about? And what happens if the next cipher key uncovers not twelve names but 100?" Stilinski asked. I hadn't really thought about that. Who knows how many supernatural creatures are in Beacon Hills? It's not exactly like there's a supernatural census every year.
"We don't think there would be that many. There's a limit." Stiles said. "Because of the numbers." Scott said pointing at the paper. "We think that once we decipher the names, the numbers will add up to 117." Scott said. "117 what?" Stilinski asked. "Million." I said. I had never been told about the vault before. That was a "family only" secret. I had only heard about it now.
Stiles grabbed the paper and started writing things on it. "K" and "M". Thousand and million. "117 million dollars, dad. Stolen from the Hale vault and is being used by someone to finance all these murders." Stiles said. "Someone who wants every supernatural in Beacon Hills dead." Scott said.
"So the codes list goes out. And somehow these professional assassins get that list." Stilinski said. "And the cipher key." Stiles added. "And then they go after the names on the list. They being the killers with no mouths, tomahawks, thermo-cut wires that can take your head off." Stilinski said. That sounds terrifying. "Let me see, Carrie was also stabbed. What's this mark?" Stiles asked tapping at the picture. There was a weird circular shape around the stab wounds. "We're not sure yet. We're still waiting on the ME's report. There's one other thing I don't get. How did this new assassin know that Demarco was going to be at the lake house?" Stilinski asked. They're assassins. Who knows? "Everyone knows he delivers kegs to teenagers for a little extra cash." Scott said. "Ah." Stilinski said nodding. "So whoever ordered that keg killed Demarco." Stilinski said. "Yeah, it was someone at the party." Stiles said. "A student." Scott said.
"So a high school student killed Demarco and the girl.... what was her name?" I asked. "Carrie." Stiles said. "Right." He nodded. "But that's not the most alarming part of what we know." Stiles said. I raised and eyebrow. "It isn't?" I asked. Why could be more alarming than a homicidal high schooler? "No." Stiles said picking up the paper. He flipped it over to the side that he hadn't showed us yet. There was my name and a number beside it.
EVA ARGENT 400000
"That's not surprising." I said. Stiles just stared at me. "It isn't?" He demanded. I shook my head. "If they knew about all of you, they had to of known about me." I explained.
"What about the number?" Scott asked just as surprised. I shrugged. "Four hundred thousand? You heard Braeden in Mexico. Someone offered her ten million once." I reminded him. "No!" Stiles exclaimed frustrated. He grabbed the marker and the list. He scribbled a letter down and pushed it toward me. There was an "M" beside the number.
"Million, Eva. Four hundred million."
