Chapter 64
I woke up to a buzzing noise next to my head. I rubbed my eyes and reached over to the table beside the couch. I grabbed my phone off of it and answered it.
"Hello?" I said and yawned. "Eva, it's Stilinski. Parrish and I just finished questioning the ME." He told me. I knew who he was talking about. It was the ME that had tried to kill me at the hospital. "He wants to talk to you." That caught me off guard. "Normally I wouldn't offer but under the circumstances..." He trailed off. I sat up on the couch. "Yeah, I said. I'll be there in ten." I told him. "I'll be waiting." He said and hung up. I put my phone back on the table and rubbed my eyes.
I hadn't been getting too much sleep lately between worrying about the dead pool and Derek and sleeping on the growingly uncomfortable couch. When I realized that Derek hadn't been telling me the whole truth, I was angry. He had been so mad at me for keeping secrets and then he had the nerve to do the same thing. So we were back to our separate sleeping arrangements.
I got up and headed to the bathroom. I got dressed and left without waking up Derek. Like I had told Stilinski, I was there in about ten minutes.
I walked into the station. "Eva." I heard Parrish call. He was on the far side of the room. I walked over to him. He put his hand on the small of my back and lead me down a hallway. "This isn't normal procedure but Stilinski feels that you should be allowed that. The ME confessed to attempted murder." Parrish stopped at a door. "Stilinski will be in there with you if anything happens and I'll be right here." He told me. I nodded and looked at the door. I'm sure all Stilinski's worried about it the potential of using his gun on me. "He won't hurt you again. We won't let him." Parrish promised. I smiled and looked at him. He's such a sweet guy. How could he like a monster like me? "I know." I told him.
He reached for the door knob. "Parrish." I said. He froze and looked at me. "Thank you." I said again. I owed this man my life, what little that was worth. He smiled. "Anytime." He said and opened the door for me.
I walked in to see Stilinski standing to my left and the ME handcuffed to the table. Strange. I expected to be overcome with rage when I was him. But instead I felt pity. Maybe it was because I knew what having the intense desire to kill someone felt like. Maybe it was because he failed.
I nodded to Stilinski and walked to the table. I sat down opposite to the ME. Stilinski gave me a warning look. I nodded again.
The ME looked up at me from the table. I almost flinched when I looked into his eyes. He was terrified. Not just in general. He was terrified of me. He shrunk away as far as his handcuffs would let him. I had seen that look before. It didn't matter who it came from, an innocent victim or a man who had tried to kill me, it still made me sick to my stomach.
"You're not one of the professionals, are you?" I asked him. He glanced up at me and back down. He shook his head slowly. "I'm not angry." I said in hopes of reassuring him. He looked up slowly. "Why not?" He asked timidly. I shrugged and leaned back in the chair. "You made me realize that I have a reason to live." I told him. "So, in a way, I want to thank you." I crossed my arms.
I crossed my arms. "Stilinski told me that you wanted to talk. So let's talk." I said. He glanced at Stilinski for a few seconds and then back at me. I raised an eyebrow. "Don't worry about it. He knows everything." I leaned into the table. The ME leaned back, as far as he could. "So don't you dare hold anything back." It was a threat. I may not be angry but I really don't want to waist time trying to decipher cryptic messages.
"Why are you worth so much?" He asked quietly. I leaned back and shrugged. "Don't know. I was kinda hoping you would." I honestly have no idea why I'm worth that much but I have every intention of finding out. He gave me a weird look. "How did you get the dead pool anyway?" I asked him. He shifted in his chair and looked away. "I came to work with a tape on my desk. It was the instructions. I got an email with a document and a name." He explained. The name had to of been Alison. I raised an eyebrow. "Why did you go for me first?" I asked skeptic.
He gave me a startled look. "Do you have any idea how much four hundred million dollars is?" He demanded. I thought for a second and shrugged. "No, but I don't think you do either." I looked him over. "Did you not even question why I was worth that much?" I asked him. That's all I'd been doing, and he never did once? "No but I guess that doesn't matter now." He said. I nodded he did have a point.
"Who found you anyway?" He asked. I glanced at Stilinski. Hadn't anyone told him? "Deputy Parrish." I said cautiously. Had there been a specific reason that they hadn't told him. "What was he doing in the morgue?" He asked. I glanced at Stilinski again. He seemed just as confused as I was. "He was getting a report from you." I said as if it would have been obvious. He shook his head. "Parrish had already gotten the report from me before I put you in the body compartment." He said. I gave him a funny look and then at Stilinski who obviously hadn't heard about that yet. "If Parrish ha already gotten the report, then what the hell was he doing in there?"
