Fried Chicken and Waffle Fries

Chapter 23

Moana's POV

After the lake...

 Ariel and Jack went off by themselves to grab a late dinner at the dining hall while Maui decided to treat me to supper off campus. I insisted on splitting the bill but he insisted on treating me since I did so for him the last time we had dinner off campus, which was to celebrate him getting on the football team. I look at him sheepishly. "Maui, where are you taking me for dinner?" He grins at me. "I'm taking you to that new fried chicken place you've been wanting to try." I look at him in shock and squeal, causing Maui to laugh at my silly reaction. "You're so cute when you're excited Mo." I blush and hide my face in my hands. Before he starts the car, he takes my hands away from my face and kisses me on the cheek. "Much better. Now off to dinner we go." He pulls out of the parking lot and drives us to the restaurant. It's about fifteen minutes away which isn't bad. 

Fifteen minutes later...

 Maui pulls into the parking lot of the restaurant, grabs his wallet and phone, and runs around to my side of the car to open the door for me. I give him a playful curtsy as I get out of the car. What a gentleman he is. I'm so blessed. Maui does the same for me when we enter the restaurant. He also offers to wait in line for our food. I tell that I want some spicy fried chicken tenders with waffle fries and buffalo sauce. For a drink, I tell him to get me a grape soda. He gives me a nod and a toothy grin. Most people can't pull off a teeth gap but he can. It looks so damn adorable on him. Gah he melts my heart. A few minutes later, he comes back to the table with the drinks and mountain of food. I nearly giggle at the sight of such a massive amount of food. Maui basically got one of everything on the menu. Classic Maui. 

  "Maui, you ordered everything on the menu." He shrugs his shoulders playfully and digs into his food, as do I. I moan from pleasure. The food is exactly as I dreamed it would be, complete and utter perfection. It melts into my mouth easily. Plus, the waffle fries are salted just right and the chicken is just the right level of spicy. We alternate between talking and eating because neither one of us wants to hurry back to campus. Not that we're dreading seeing our roommates and best friends because we're not, we simply don't want this amazing day to come to an end. The moment Maui drops me off at my dorm and heads back to his is the moment it all sets in the day is over. 

   All of the sudden Maui becomes quiet and looks a little solemn. "Maui, are you okay?" He nods and puts on a fake smile but I don't buy it. I know him too well. Maui can't fool me. I know when he's upset and he's upset about something. "Maui, I know you're upset. What's wrong?" He sighs. "It's really stupid." I frown at him. "Maui..." "Jack told me a couple of things and I don't know what to do." I look at him curiously. "What'd he tell you?" I can see Maui hesitate before he speaks again. "Well for one thing, he was at Tamatoa's party the other night... without Ariel." My eyes bug out of my head. "WHAT? WHY?" Maui's hands thrash around. "Please quiet down Mo. We don't need everyone nosing into our business." I silently apologize. "That's really strange. What else did he tell you?" Maui takes a deep breath. "He told me that he got drunk and did something really stupid." I panic. "D-Did he cheat on Ariel?" "Yes and no." I raise an eyebrow. "What do you mean yes and no? Either he did or he didn't." 

   I continue to angrily ramble and Maui puts a finger to my lips to silence me. "Yes Jack did cheat on Ariel but on purpose. In fact, he doesn't remember most of it. He thinks it was based on a dare." I shake Maui's shoulders. "Just come out with it already. The suspense is killing me. I need to know what he did Maui." Maui chuckles at my actions but his facial expression shifts into one of anger as he says "He made out with Tamatoa." My eyes bug even farther out of my head and my jaw drops. "WHAT THE HELL??!!!!" Maui nods in agreement. "That's exactly what I said. I asked him why the hell we would even do that. He didn't really have a good answer, but he does feel like a dumbass for doing so." "Do we tell Ariel?" Maui shakes his head no. "I don't like keeping secrets, but I honestly think that it's Jack's place to tell her that, not us." I sigh. "Yeah you're probably right, though I hope he tells her the truth. Ariel's been through enough as it is." Maui nods in agreement again. 

   We sit in silence for a few minutes before calling it a night. Maui walks me back to my dorm as usual after being together, though we linger a little longer than usual in the hallway and kiss even more. I envelop Maui in one last tight hug, run down the hall to brush my teeth because I happen to have my tooth paste and toothbrush on me right now, and immediately go to bed.
