Chapter 9

Moana's POV

 I look from Ariel to this random guy sitting at our table and back to her quickly. This is super awkward. I make a coughing sound to break the silence. "Um excuse me. Who are you and why are you sitting at our table?" The guy puts a hand out for me to shake. "The name's Tamatoa. I'm a student here just like you girls, just a little older. I'm a junior. I'm a law major." I look at him skeptically before shaking his hand. "Nice to meet you Tamatoa. I'm Moana and this is Ariel." I glance at Ariel who's as white as a sheet and looks like she might wet herself at any moment. This is really strange. I'm not going to question her about her behavior around this guy. I'm sure that she's just being shy is all." Tamatoa flashes me a wide grin. His teeth are so white that they almost blind me. "Well I'll be going. I'll see you around girls." He drops a piece of paper in front of me as he pushes in his chair and walks away. 

   When he's out of earshot, I look at Ariel to see her reaction. She still has that look of fear on her face. "Ariel, relax. I know that what just happened as a little weird, but he's not going to hurt you. He's just trying to be friendly." I glance at the piece of paper he dropped in front of me and see that it has his name and phone number on it. I don't know how to feel about this. I don't mind being friends with this guy as long as he doesn't start flirting with me. "Ariel, are you okay? You're not saying anything and it's scaring me." For the first time since that weird encounter, Ariel looks me in the eyes and acknowledges my presence. "I'm fine Mo. Tamatoa just creeps me out a little bit. I saw him hanging on some girls at the party last night and was being a little too raunchy for my taste." I raise an eyebrow at her. "Is that so? I can see what you mean. He looks like a major party person and even a jock." 

  Ariel nods and plays with the remnants of her food in silence. "I'll be right back Ariel." I go to get a refill on my drink and collide into Jack. "I'm sorry Jack. I didn't look where I was going." He laughs. "It's okay Moana." "Jack, can you go talk to Ariel? She's very uneasy right now. A guy named Tamatoa came by our table a few minutes ago and was talking to us. He gives her the creeps apparently." I study Jack's face only to find it clouded. He nods and goes over to Ariel. As I refill my drink, I watch them from afar. I can't make out the words of their conversation but I notice that Ariel's on the verge of a panic attack. I frown and make my way back over to the table. Ariel bursts into tears. Jack motions for me to help carry her. I wrap one of her arms around me and the other around Jack. Like most panic attacks, Ariel's making her unstable and weak. In other words, she can't support herself by standing on her own two feet. 

   We carry her back to our dorm and lay her down gently in bed. Ariel thrashes like a child for a few minutes, kicking and screaming before her eyes close and she falls asleep. I look at Jack and he equally mirrors my panic. This is bad, really bad. "Jack, what are we going to do?" He runs a hand through his hair and sighs. "I don't know what we're going to do about Ariel, but I will tell you this. Be careful around Tamatoa. I saw that he gave you his number on a little piece of paper. It's up to you whether or not you want to be friends with him. He's not entirely what he seems." I take a moment to absorb what he said before nodding in response. "Do you think Ariel will be okay Jack?" He sighs. I can tell that he's even more drained than I am. "I think that it's going to take time for her to get over that asshole drug raping her, but I think that one day, she'll be the Ariel we know and love again. For now, we just have to be gentle with her and take things in stride." 

   I sit on the foot of her bed and watch her chest rise and fall steadily while she sleeps. She looks a lot more peaceful when she's asleep than when she's awake. "Hey Jack, you're welcome to stay here for as long as you want, can I just ask you for a favor?" He nods. "Can you text Maui and ask him to come here too? I'll be asleep by the time he gets here because I'm exhausted and need a nap. I just want him to be the first face I wake up to." Jack gives me a kind smile. "I understand that. That's how I feel about Ariel. I'll text him right now." As he texts Maui, I climb into my own bed and fall asleep. A little while later, I feel two strong arms wrap around me and I relax instantly in them. Maui's here. He came to me. I love him so much.
