I Need To Remember 

Chapter 32

Moana's POV

After surgery...

  Apparently I'm in the hospital for an extreme brain and head injury that I don't even remember getting. I'm surrounded by my parents and these other random people that I can't remember. They're looking at me so though I'm supposed to, especially this big, strong guy covered in tattoos. He looks familiar but I can't place a name to him. He's practically staring in my soul. It's making me a little bit nervous. My doctor's also speaking to me at the same time, telling me how extensive my injuries are and that I will be in the hospital for another week or two. "Doctor, can you tell everyone else to leave but my parents? I need to speak with them for a few minutes in private." She nods. She goes over to the two guys and girl, politely asking them to step out of the room. All three hesitate for a moment but do as they've been asked. 

   "Mom, Dad, can you explain to me what's going on and who all of those people are?" Both of my parents nod but my mom speaks first. "You got a serious head injury due to a guy named Scar. He's apparently the cousin of a mean guy on the football team. He was meant to hurt Maui but you volunteered to take the beating instead, which is both admirable and extremely stupid." I wince slightly at her last couple words. She sighs. "I'm sorry my little minnow. That was a bad choice of words. Your father and I are just scared right now. Isn't that right Tui?" My dad nods and joins my mother's side. "Those people that were in the room a few moments ago are very important. I know you can't remember them right now, but you will in time. The redhead girl is named Ariel. She's your college roommate and best friend. I don't know her too well yet but she's a really sweet girl who's dedicated to her studies just like you, making her the perfect roommate. That boy with the white hair is named Jack. He's Maui's roommate, Ariel's boyfriend, and a good friend to you." 

  My heart begins to race at the mere mention of Maui's name. I swear I know him but I just can't remember how. "Tell me about Maui." My father gives me a gentle smile. "Maui is your favorite person in the world. He's been your best friend since kindergarten. Over time, he became your boyfriend. You two love each other so much. He feels so guilty for this happening to you. The poor boy wants to speak with you but he's afraid that he's going to scare you." I sit in silence for a minute absorbing everything he just told me about those three people. "I'm not ready to see all of them, but I want to see Maui. Can you go get him for me?" He nods and goes out into the hall. I watch him speak with Maui who hesitantly comes back in a moment later. He stands rather far away but continues to stare at me like he did a few minutes ago, though I'm starting to get used to it. "Mom, Dad, now can you two step out for a few minutes?" Both of them give me a kiss on the forehead and Maui quick hugs before stepping out into the hall, keeping Ariel and Jack company. 

   Maui looks at me in shock. "I'm grateful that you let me come back in. I wasn't sure if you would even want to see me. I know you don't remember me right now and the last thing I want to do is scare you in your current state." I look at him sadly. "I may not remember you exactly, but I can feel it in my heart that you're very important to me. I hope my memory comes back to me soon because you don't seem like the kind of guy I'd ever want to forget. In fact, you seem the one for me." Tears form in his eyes and my heart breaks. I can only imagine how much me not remembering him hurts him. "Thank you Moana. That gives me some hope that you'll come back to me. I love you. You don't have to say it back, I just wanted you to know." I take his hands in mine and squeeze them gently. "I know. Hopefully I'll be able to say it back soon. In the meantime, can I ask you something?" Maui nods. "Anything." I bite my lip nervously. "Can you promise me that you won't give up on me?" Maui leans a bit closer to me and kisses me on the cheek. His simple act of affection causes me to tense up. He senses it and steps back, looking rather sad. 

  "Maui, I'm sorry. I don't know why I tensed up like that. Please forgive me." Maui looks at me in panic. "I'm not mad at you Mo. I should have asked your permission before doing so. I know that threw you off guard." I nod. "It did but seriously, it's okay. In fact, it felt nice." Maui and I both look down awkwardly and blush before looking back up at one another. "You're really cute Maui." He smiles the most lovely smile I've ever seen. "Well you're beautiful." My heart flutters and despite not remembering him, I find myself pulling him by his shirt towards me and crashing my lips onto his. The kiss ends up being the best one that I've ever had in my life. The kiss also confirms that I need to remember Maui and soon. I need to be his and for him to be mine.
