A Bundle Of Nerves

Chapter 38

Moana's POV

A week later.. 

  It's exactly one more week until the trial and I'm just a bigger bunch of nerves with each passing day. I can only imagine how bad I'm going to be in just a few days time. I'm really proud of myself for actually having the courage to go through with this despite knowing that it's going to mess me up emotionally and mentally before, during, and after the trial. I'm just lucky to have so many people in my corner to help me get through this. I'm hoping that after the trial, I can begin to put this all behind me once and for all. 

  I've started to get back into my normal routine of going to class, eating meals in the dining hall, and pulling all nights to get homework and studying done. I'm tired as hell but I feel a little more normal than I have lately. Right now, I'm currently in the midst of a study session with Ariel. She's helping me prep for an exam tomorrow and I'm doing the same for her. Our study sessions are super intense. Only the best for us girls who want nothing more than to succeed in this life. Based on how the two of are doing at the moment, I feel confident we're both going to ace our exams in the morning. 

Three hours later...

   We decide to take a study break and grab supper as a group with Maui and Jack. We're meeting them outside the dining hall in fifteen minutes. Right as I grab my phone, my stomach rumbles. Ariel giggles and pokes my stomach awkwardly. "It sounds like someone's hungry." I blush slightly. "Oh hush. I know you are too." Ariel giggles again and puts her hands up surrender. "You caught me. Now let's hurry. I need food like pronto." I nod and follow her out the door. We run (literally) to the dining hall and crash into Maui and Jack (also literally). Both of them scoop us up and we burst into yet another giggle fit, shocking I know. We just can't stop giggling today. What's wrong with us? 

    They put us down a couple of minutes later and we go in to eat. I grab everything in sight as I often do along with a peach iced tea for a drink. Maui has an equally filled tray of food so I don't feel like a pig for grabbing as much as I did. The both of us have already eaten a quarter of our food by the time Ariel and Jack get to our table. They shake their heads in laughter and start on their food. We eat in silence for a few minutes before Jack breaks it. "So Mo, are you ready for the trial next week?" My happy mood shifts into a darker one. Ariel gives him a warning look not to press further about it but he does. "I didn't mean to bring it up and remind you of what Tamatoa and Scar did to you." Maui puts an arm around me protectively and glares slightly at Jack. "That's enough Jack." Jack puts his hands up in surrender with an expression of panic on his face. "I-I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to upset you Mo." I sigh. "I know you didn't mean any harm Jack. The trial is just a sensitive topic for me." 

   I notice Ariel and Maui having an intense stare down. When they notice me catching them in the act, Ariel turns her attention back onto Jack and Maui does the same back onto me. That was a little weird to be honest, though I'm sure it was just them both being protective, Ariel towards Jack and Maui towards me. The rest of supper is rather awkward. Maui, Ariel, and Jack are all afraid to speak in case they say the wrong thing and upset me further. I can't take it anymore. I'm going to break it once more. "Guys, I'm fine. I'm a little tired, but I'm fine. If you want to talk about the trial, you can. Don't let my nerves get in the way of that." Maui rubs gentle circles on my back. "Baby girl, it's fine. We're not going to talk about it anymore tonight. Instead, we're going to wait until you're comfortable to talk about it. Isn't that right guys?" Maui gives Ariel and Jack a sideways glance to make them agree with him and they do. I breathe a sigh of relief I didn't know I had in me as the conversation shifts onto a different topic and the rest of supper has a much more lighthearted air to it. 

After supper...

   The guys drop us off at our dorm but before they let us go inside, they pull us in for a tight hug and gentle kiss. We watch them from the doorway all lovey dovey until they're out of sight. Once they are, we immediately get back to finishing up some homework and getting ready for bed. It's been a long day for all of us. I'm sure the guys are going to collapse in bed soon themselves.
