Making Amends 

Chapter 26

Ariel's POV

A few days later...

  I've done a lot of thinking these past few days and I think I'm ready to forgive Jack. Having some space from him allowed me to absorb the news, calm down, and realize that it wasn't a drunken mistake. I know that he doesn't have romantic feelings for Tamatoa and vice versa. I texted Jack a few minutes ago asking him if we could talk over drinks and he agreed to meet me at the coffee shop down the street in an hour. I'm so glad that we're going to work things out because Jack's a great guy and I really like him.

An hour later...

  Jack meets me right on time at the coffee shop. We walk in silence inside. I go to order my favorite latte when Jack offers to pay for me, given everything that he's put me through. We fight about it for a couple of minutes before I cave and let him pay for it. We wait for our drinks. Once we get them, we sit down. "Listen Ariel, I can't even begin to tell you how sorry I am. I was so very stupid at that party last week. If I was sober, I never would agreed to a dare so gross and stupid." I sigh. "It's okay. I'm sorry for giving you the cold shoulder. I've realized now that what you did was simply a drunken mistake. It happens. Plus, it's not like you have romantic feelings for Tamatoa." He bursts into laughter. "Now that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Though I honestly think that Tamatoa is bisexual." I raise an eyebrow. "Really? Tell me more." He winces slightly. "I-I'd rather not." My mouth stupidly forms an "O" shape as I realize that he's referring to the makeout session at the party. 

   An awkward silence passes over before I decide to break it. "Jack, I just want to forget about this and move on. The more we dwell on it, the more it will destroy our relationship. When we look back at this, I want us to be able to say it was simply a bump in the road, nothing more, nothing less." He nods. "Me too Ariel." He reaches for my hands across the table and takes them in his. Even though a small part of me feels like pulling them away, I don't. I told myself and him that we're going to get past this. We won't be able to get past this if I start to hesitate in doing simple things such as holding hands with one another. 

   Jack and I start to fall back into our normal groove by talking about how classes are going, the adventures we have with our roommates/best friends, food, etc. We spend another two hours in the cafe before heading back to campus because we both have an evening class to attend. He drops me off at my dorm room. Before leaving, he gives me a gentle kiss on the cheek and quick peck on the lips. Both of us wanted to do more than that but Mo's standing in the doorway with a smirk on her face. "I'm glad you two lovebirds made up. I was getting worried I wouldn't be able to witness these lovely displays anymore." I grab a pillow off my bed and throw it at her. Jack and her talk for a minute before he gives me one last look and heads to his dorm and then class himself. 

  Mo throws my pillow back at me. "It's nice to see you too Ariel." I roll my eyes at her playfully. "Are you down with classes for the day Mo?" She nods and I groan. "Lucky, I have an evening class in forty five minutes for in which I have to leave to go there in fifteen minutes. It's all the way across campus in that weird looking building." "I know that building. It seems really interesting. I don't have any classes in there this semester but I'm hoping to next semester just to see the inside of it." I giggle. "You do know I can just take you on a tour sometime before or after class right?" She looks away sheepishly. "Yeah I should have realized that. Silly me. On a serious note, I'm really happy that you and Jack worked things out. You two are a really great couple. I might even go as far as saying that the two of you belong together." I blush a bit at her compliment. "I wouldn't go that far. If anything, I'd say that about you and Maui. You two have known each other forever and have so much love for one another. It's so true and pure. I see the way he looks at you. It's as if there's no other girl in the world except for you. You're his world Mo." 

   She sighs contently. "Maui is the love of my life. I know that I'm a bit young to say that but I've known it all along. Even when dating other guys, my mind and heart always drifted back to him. Now that I'm with him romantically, it feels like a dream. I waited twelve years for him. I'm so blessed that he's mine and I'm his." I sigh dreamily. "That's how I felt about Jack before he did what he did. I forgave and we're moving past it all, but it's going to take a little while to get that feeling back. I really hope that I do." Mo puts a hand on my shoulder. "You will get that feeling back. Just give it time. Anyways you need to get going to class. I don't want to make you late." I look at the time. She's right. I really do need to leave now in order to get to class on time. "Thank you Mo. I'll meet you for dinner at the cafeteria after it's over. I give her a quick hug, grab my book bag, and head to class. I manage to get there in fifteen minutes. I sit in my set, wait for class to begin, and daydream about Jack as my professor gives another boring lecture. 

After class... Dinner with Mo...

I meet Mo for dinner as promised. I didn't eat much today so I plan on eating up a storm. Mo apparently is in the same situation because we both grab one of everything to eat. When we sit down, several people gape at our plates in shock. I bet most of these people have never seen such a mountain of food on two girls' plates before. The two of us simply ignore their stares and dive into our food. When we're about halfway done with eating, Jack shows up with an arm wrapped around Maui, who doesn't look so good...
