The Trial

Chapter 40

Maui's POV

 The morning of the trial...

The trial is in three hours from now but Mo and I decided to wake up early and have a little while to ourselves before we have to meet up with everyone and face nearly everyone in town at the trial. It's all everyone's been buzzing about. It's sickening. All of these people are excited to see my baby girl relive the worst attack of her life all over again, possibly leading to a breakdown. If that happens, I'm carrying Mo in my arms out of the courtroom and to a private place where she can let it all out. She's so brave for even doing this in the first place. I know that I wouldn't be able to do it if I were in her shoes.

Mo and I went off campus to a quaint diner to grab breakfast and talk, though I'm doing most of the talking. I repeatedly reassure her that everything is going to be fine. She nods and puts an a fake smile to ease my worries but I'm still worried nonetheless. I'm also trying to convince her to eat her breakfast because it's going to be a long day and she needs some food in her system to get through it. "Mo, please eat at least some of your food. You really need it to get through today." She nods and sighs, beginning to eat some eggs and bacon, casting the hash browns aside. To be fair, the hash browns don't look too appetizing but the eggs and bacon do. As for me, I ordered pumpkin spice waffles with home fries. They are so freaking good. I sure do love food. I'm surprised I'm not a culinary major. I cook a lot in my spare time and the food I cook isn't half bad surprisingly.

Three hours later... At the courthouse...

As I help Mo out of my car, we're swamped with news reporters, noisy people from campus, and noisy town residents asking us a million questions. I can see Mo's hands shake so I take both of them in mine and hold her to my chest, pushing through the crowd to get over to Ariel, Jack, and her parents. Besides myself, those are the only people I trust to love and protect Mo. We manage to get to them after about five minutes of fighting against the mob of people. I'm honestly pissed about this. The town shouldn't allow all of these people to be here. Most of them don't even give a damn about Mo. They're just here to witness the drama for their amusement. Mo runs into her parents arms and hugs them tightly. I do the same with Ariel and Jack. "Thanks for coming guys. It means a lot to both Mo and I that you're here." Ariel smiles warmly at me. "It's no problem Maui. Mo's my best friend and we both care about her so much." Jack nod in agreement. "We're happy to be here for the both of you man." Mo pulls apart from her parents and the six of us head inside followed by the mob of people.

  Half an hour later...

The judge enters the courtroom along with the two pieces of shit (Tamatoa and Scar). I want nothing more than for them to be found guilty and end up with a long prison sentence. Those assholes deserve to rot a good portion of their lives in jail. Hell if it were up to me, I'd sentence them to life in jail. Mo hates when I say things like that so I tend to just think them in my mind most of the time and not say them aloud. There's a sea of whispering in the crowd but the judge silences them immediately by banging her mallet. She's a middle aged woman named judge Judy (see what I did there). She's the kind of woman who has a tough exterior but a loving interior that she's willing to showcase in front of certain people who she feels deserve her kindness. I'm hoping she shows a lot of it to Mo.

The judge calls Tamatoa to the stand first. He walks up there in handcuffs with the biggest smirk on his face. I just want to slap it off of him. A lawyer asks him several questions and he answers all of them honestly surprisingly. I look at him in shock. I didn't see that coming, though I fear that he's up to something and I can't place what exactly that something is. I bet Scar's in on it though. Those two are the worst duo in history. The judge doesn't seem to believe Tamatoa entirely which means the ruling is in our favor. I hope she has the same attitude towards Scar. I sit on the edge of my sit as I watch his questioning play out as well. His is worse. He answers everything sarcastically like he doesn't give a shit about whether or not he ends up rotting away in jail. Hooray!

Scar makes his way back down to his seat next to Tamatoa. Both of them glare at me simultaneously. I roll my eyes at them and focus on Mo as she's called up to the stand to testify to the court. I give her a kiss on the cheek and whisper sweet nothings into her ear as she heads up front. She swears to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth, beginning the questioning process. Mo answers all of them with such ease and honesty. I glance over at Tamatoa and Scar, both of whom look like they're about to shit their pants at any moment. I smirk and chuckle to myself. I'm so proud of my girl. The lawyer questioning her and the judge are both very pleased with her answers and are sympathetic towards her. We have this in the bag.

The jury then goes off into a private room to discuss the verdict, which doesn't take long because I saw how the jury reacted to Tamatoa and Scar's testimonies. They were all horrified. Judge Judy asks one of them to state the verdict aloud. A girl not too much older than Mo volunteers to do so. "The court and jury hereby finds Tamatoa and Scar guilty. They both are sentenced to twenty five years in jail for assault and battery, robbery, and rape charges. Bail is withheld from them both." Mo looks up at me beaming so happily. I breath out a sigh of relief and lift Mo up into my arms. "Mo we did it! We won!" She pecks me on the lips and giggles adorably. "I know. I'm so happy. I don't have to live in fear every second of the day anymore." I peck her back on the lips. "I'm so glad you don't. Besides, if anything else were to happen, I'm here to protect you. I love you so much Mo." She wraps her arms tighter around my neck, burying her face in my chest. "I love you too Maui."

After Mo and I have our moment, we leave the courthouse with her parents, Ariel, and Jack in tow. Together, we head out to have an early dinner celebration. The outcome of the trial today definitely calls for a celebration in my book. What a great ending to a very crappy story.
