The following morning, Manny was helping her dad set up the drills for the football team. She was exhausted and had planned on taking a nap in his office once practice started, but that plan went out the window when she saw the football players arriving, including her best friend.
Manny walked to the parking lot and saw Clover getting her bag out of the back of Dante's car. Manny waved to him in his work uniform. Dante waved back with a gentle smile before saying his goodbye to Clover and driving off.
Clover walked with Manny as she drank a protein shake. "How'd the date go. You never told me." She spoke.
Manny squealed excitedly as she walked along with Clover to the football field. She sat with Clover on the sidelines as she changed her sneakers for her cleats.
"He took me to the donut shop, cause I'm craving donuts like crazy lately." Manny begun. "And than after that, we walked to this flower shop and he bought me this yellow flower and than we walked back to my house. The entire time we were talking and laughing and it was like old times. I'm really starting to think that we're getting back to where we use to be."
Clover looked over to her and smiled. "That's good. I'm happy for y'all. Y'all gonna make it official soon?"
Manny shrugged as she looked around for Jacob to get there and gear up like the other players who were getting out their parents cars or their own cars. "I don't know. Maybe you can ask for me."
Clover chuckled as she watched Manny look for Jacob. The only players coming were the varsity players so Manny knew it wasn't going to be hard to find him.
"I'll think about it." Clover spoke. When she looked forward, she saw Mateo looking at her and smiled when she looked at him. He waved her over as he told her to come over to him. Clover got up and left Manny to look for Jacob by herself.
When Clover walked up to Mateo, he was standing with a boy. The boy had dark brown hair that was long but looked like he had recently cut it so the tips were barely touching his shoulder blades. He had tanned skin and light brown eyes. He was around 5'11. Clover had never seen him around before, so she knew he had to be new to the team.
"And this is the quarterback Clover." Mateo smiled, putting his hand on Clover's shoulder. She held out her hand and shook the boy's hand.
"Hi, nice to meet you." The boys smiled.
Clover smiled back. "You too." She turned to Mateo and gave him a look.
Mateo put his hand on the boy's shoulder as he slightly pushed them closer together so they were a foot apart. "Clover, this is your new fullback Colby. He's replacing Ricky. So get to know each other because you're a starter and he's a starter, meaning you'll be getting close soon."
Clover snapped her head up to Mateo, but he already started to walk off. She turned her attention back to Colby who was just looking down at his feet. Clover looked over his features on his face. He had thin pink lips and had bushy eyebrows and his hair was thick. She watched as he tied it up into a thick bun on the top of his head. Colby also had stubble growing across his jaw, cheeks and top lip.
"What's your last name?" Clover asked, moving her weight from her heels to the balls of her feet and continuing to rock back and forth.
Colby quickly looked up at her to meet her gaze. "Dorian. Colby Dorian." He answered. "You?"
"Jones. Clover Jones." She replied. "You're Armenian, aren't you?"
Colby looked taken back for a moment, but nodded. "Yeah." He spoke with a chuckle. "How'd you know?"
