Sunday late afternoon, the starters of the football team had to go to a night practice, so they were all geared up and sitting around waiting for Mateo to start up their next drills.
Jose was sitting on the sidelines bench with Colby next to him. The two had became close since their conversation on the curb waiting for their rides home after practice. They exchanged phone numbers and texted every night.
"Your sister still making you do her chores since you broke that vase?" Colby smiled, putting on his gloves.
Jose snickered. "Yeah. Sadly." He spoke, tying up his cleats before dropping his foot off the bench. "How'd that job interview go? You get the job?"
Colby scoffed. "A barista at Starbucks? It's a breeze. I aced that interview."
Jose frowned as he put his elbows on the back of the bench and leaned back. "You drink Starbucks coffee?"
"Not really. I love coffee but I've never been to Starbucks." Colby smirked. He looked back at Jose since he was leaning forward and Jose was leaning back. "What? You going to go buy me some coffee or something?"
Jose smirked. "Hey, if you want to go out with me you can come with me any time you want."
Colby laughed with a hint of nervousness behind it. "Yeah. Whatever." He spoke looking down at the ground. Jose frowned and looked taken back by Colby's sudden distance.
"What's wrong?" Jose asked, playfully and gently punching the back of Colby's padding.
Colby shook his head as he looked back at Jose again. "Nothing. Just thinking about how I gotta be at practice instead of eating dinner. My mom was going to make me some burritos and now I'm stuck with you all. It sucks."
Jose chuckled as he looked onto the field at Diego and Clover laying on the grass. Clover yawned as she threw her arm over her eyes.
"It's so bright. Why couldn't the sun go behind the trees quicker?" She complained.
Diego smirked as he looked over at her. "I need some advice from you, which I don't ask for often."
Clover moved her arm and looked at him. She raised her eyebrows just slightly as she waited for him to reply with what he wanted.
"I'm having dinner with Mila's family. They're a big Cuban family." Diego explained. "And since you've had dinner with your boyfriend's parents before, how do I...not get dumped?"
"Awe! Diego!" Clover squealed, sitting up and looking down at him laying in the grass. "That's so cute! You're serious about this?"
"As a heart attack." Diego replied. "Just...tell me what to do. I really like her and if they don't like me, she's gonna break up with me in a heartbeat."
Clover nodded understanding what he meant. "Just be yourself. The chill and laidback Diego. Be respectful and ask about their lives. Get to know them. Don't talk about the millions of girlfriend's you've had, but mention you're a football player with hopes and dreams. Mention what college you're going to. Talk very highly of Mila. They'll love that."
Diego nodded as he listened to her. When she finished, he sat up and sighed. "What might happen if I mess up?"
"Worst case scenario, they tell her she can't see you ever again. But knowing Mila she'll convince them that you're good people, she's very persuasive." Clover shrugged. "But keep your head high. Life is a bitch."
