Thursday morning, all of the cheerleaders were at local stores collecting money from customers walking inside while the football players were at street corners of Dallas waiting for red lights so they could collect money from the people in the cars.
Clover, Jose, Ethan, Stephen, and Jacob were sitting at a street light pole waiting for the red light while the new athletic trainer Danny was standing behind them making sure they stayed safe. The five were holding little buckets with their football team's logo of a Jaguar on it since they didn't have anything else to collect money with.
"Red light." Danny called out to them. "Be nice and don't get in the cars."
Jose scoffed as he got up. "It's better than this." He complained. He got up and walked with his friends down the rows of stopped cars. They could see some people either opening their windows to give them money or closing them so they didn't have to.
Jacob smiled to people who gave him change and small dollar bills. "Thank you." He smiled. As Jacob went to the next car, he saw their teammates who were doing the street across from them, doing the same thing.
Jacob walked around a car but saw the driver looking away so he didn't have to look Jacob in the eyes. He just kept walking but saw Ethan walk up to the car and lean into the man's window since it was wide open and it was 100 degrees today.
"Hey, man." Ethan smiled. "Help out your local football team. The flood really hit us hard. Destroyed everything we loved. Without football we might end up on the street, so you may see me again but next time I'll be asking you for money so I can feed my heroin addiction. Help the youth."
The man stared at Ethan with a annoyed look. "I'll give you a couple dollars if you leave me alone."
Ethan smiled widely. "$20 will do us well. We need thousands of dollars to keep us from ending up on the street. We're young, my man. We're just trying to survive during these hard times. Like the movie Friday night lights, Odessa Texas is the home of football. That's all they care about. So do we! We--"
"Oh my god! Shut up!" The man yelled, handing him $20. Ethan put it in the bucket before getting out of the street since the light turned green.
Danny chuckled as he saw Ethan doing a little dance since he hustled his way into getting the money. "Stop hassling people into giving you money. You're gonna get punched."
Ethan shrugged as he set his bucket down on the ground. He sat down in the grass next to Jose and Jacob while Stephen and Clover stayed standing by the light post. Danny was leaning against it and was standing behind Clover.
"I'm tired." Clover yawned. "How long we gotta do this?"
"Another hour or so." Danny answered, he tapped her side as he walked in front of her. "You'll live. We can get food soon."
"Can we get food now?" Stephen asked, raising his eyebrows. "Please? We're starving."
"Yeah." Jacob agreed with him. "We work for food. Give us food and we'll work longer. No food, no work."
Clover looked up at Danny since he was towering over her. "I'll get it. I already know what they want. Perks of being friends with them for so long. You can trust me."
Danny looked down at her and smirked. "Oh yeah? I can trust you with my credit card to get us some food?"
Clover nodded with an innocent smile. Danny chuckled as he shook his head and looked at the five of them. "Come on, Clover. There's a McDonald's up the street. We're walking. Boys, be safe and don't get into any of the cars. Ethan stop being weird to people. I want all four of you still here when I get back."
