The following morning, Manny was doing her usual task that she did any other morning in the summer nowadays. She was holding a football play book as she listened to Clover call the plays and made sure the plays went off correctly.
Manny looked up and saw the play they were calling wasn't correct. When Clover went to throw the ball to Jacob, she was wide open to the right side and was open for tackles. Manny put her hands up and let Mateo take the play book from her as he yelled at them frustrated as he watched Ethan run up behind Clover and lift her up since he didn't want to tackle her.
"What the hell are you guys doing?!" Mateo yelled. "You have one job! Protect the quarterback! If she gets hit, she loses the ball! If these weren't her own teammates, she'd be eating dirt right now! Do it again!"
They all lined up at the line of scrimmage and listened to Clover call the play for what felt like the 100th time. When she called hut and caught the ball from her center, she went to throw it to Jose but the defense had caught up to him.
"Slightly better." Mateo called out. "Jose, run faster. Get open for the ball. If you don't she's gotta go with someone else."
Jose nodded as he jogged back over to the line of scrimmage. Mateo blew his whistle and called out for them to do a defensive play.
"Actually hit her. Go full force. She's not a porcelain doll." Mateo reminded them before blowing the whistle.
Colby got into position on the line of scrimmage as he listened to the play. Once it was called he instantly went for the cornerback who went to tackle Clover. Colby instantly went to tackle him but he had just missed him and the cornerback tackled Clover.
Colby quickly went over to Clover and helped her up. "Sorry. My fault. I missed him by an inch."
"It's all good." Clover shrugged. "Common mistake."
Colby went back over to his spot and noticed Jose walking past him. Jose went to touch him, but they were already getting ready to call the play, so he ran to his spot.
Colby waited for the right moment and blind sided the cornerback making them tumble onto the sidelines. Colby got up and helped his teammate up.
"Nice hit." The cornerback smiled. "Damn near broke me in half."
Colby chuckled as a response before heading back to the line of scrimmage. When he got to his spot, he lifted his helmet and spit on the ground as he saw Jose walking pass him. Jose ran his fingers across Colby's arm as Colby stepped on his spit to drive it into the ground. Colby just subtly winked to him and let Jose get to his spot on the line of scrimmage. He watched Jose stretch his arms and wait to be told where to run. Before Colby knew it, Clover had already called out the play.
Colby quickly whipped around and went to tackle the cornerback, but he had already gotten pass him. He looked back and saw him ram into Clover making a loud sound of their padding collide. Instantly, Clover flopped around on the ground as she let out a loud yell as she held onto her lower back.
"Shit." Colby yelled out. He ran over to her but she had ripped off her helmet and threw it onto the ground. She had tears forcing their way out her eyes as she laid on her side and her hands were on her back.
Mateo and Danny ran over to her and kneeled down to her. "That was a hard hit." Mateo sighed. "Clover, calm down. Breathe."
Clover breathed labored breaths as she sat up and got onto her knees. "Fuck! My back!"
Danny gently helped her stand up and waited to see if she could stand on her own two feet, which she could. Quickly Colby and Jose wrapped her arms around their necks and helped her off the field.
