Dear Diary
They were totally shook! Anyways, time check,it was 4.30pm,i had to leave soon. I got the worksheets that i had to mark and gulped and set off. I arrived at Bedok Mall in about twenty minutes, where i saw Rathi, Yokie and Jo waiting. "Did you see Xuan on the way here?" asked Jo,and i shook my head. Honestly, if i had seen her on the train, i would've screamed like a girl and run off in the opposite direction. That girl is so violent i tell you. So anyways the moment Jo said her name, she appeared with Diya, Jian and Yang Yang. "Ok! Now pass those worksheets you need to Rathi. They're gonna go to McDonald's to mark them, disguised as teachers, in case." I didn't really get it. "In case what?" i asked. Diya rolled her eyes like i was missing something really obvious. "IN CASE students go there and get suspicious of the worksheets and red pens." she said. "Rathi, Jian and Yokie are still students, you know." I was impressed. These kids think of everything. So i passed the worksheets to the 'teachers' of the day and followed the rest into the mall.
They actually wanted me to get a haircut! I thought my hair was slick enough, but they insisted that it was too long. So i had to get my sexy hair trimmed, because according to Xuan it made me look sharper and smarter. I could use that look to make up for my height. Then they actually dragged me home and made me iron my white button-down shirt! I thought it was already really straight, but Diya snatched the iron impatiently out of my hands (i almost got a burn) and ironed it so straight it felt like cardboard when i peeled it off the ironing board. They said that smart casual attire was perfect for DTF,and that i looked like i was ready. "Now," said Diya, turning on my computer (heey!! She didn't ask for permission) "we are going to discuss what you are going to say for tonight. Firstly, you are going to tell her your name and your job. You must also tell her what school you teach in." I gulped. "Won't that be awkward?" i said nervously. Yang shook her head. "It's only natural. And it's better because then she can relate to you and it will turn out more easy going." she said. I didn't even know Yang knew anything about blind dates. She's just some dead soul. "Then after that," said Diya, typing furiously on Microsoft Word," you are going to strike up a conversation with her. Ask her what her profession is. Ask her to explain. Ask her about her background, her age, etc." I tried doing a sort of example. "Hi,i'm Choong Chai," i said, ignoring Xuan's giggles. "I'm a Maths and Physics teacher in Bandset Girls' School. What's your profession?" Jo nodded slowly. "Not bad."she said. "But you can sound a bit more casual. Now you sound like you're talking to the VP." I laughed nervously. The VP was also called Mr Lo, and he was so tall he was like a tree to me. (Then there's Mr Neil, who's nearly eight times as tall as me.)
So i tried again. Each time i sounded more tensed up, and Diya kept groaning and smacking her forehead. "You know what?" said Xuan, taking Remmy out of her bag and gulping some water. "Let's take a break for now." She stared at me for a couple of minutes before asking, "So...is it hard bring a teacher?" I blinked. Why on earth would she ask that?
"Well," i began, "it's not that hard once you get used to the students and everything. Most of the time it looks a bit scary because you are facing a class of approximately 40 students. Sometimes they can get really noisy, so you have to find a way to keep them quiet. But they're mostly harmless. It's also important not to be too nice to them in case they take advantage of you." I took a deep breath. "Sometimes they can be like crazy fangirls, chasing after you to the staff room shrieking, but the main focus is to get the job done and earn money for the family. So i guess, it isn't that hard being a teacher." When i finished, Jo was clapping and Diya was beaming. "What...happened?" i asked nervously, thinking something weird might have popped up behind me. "Nothing," said Diya. "You know what to say to her now." "No i don't!!!" i cried. "Yes you DO." said Xuan firmly, nodding her head so vigorously her ponytail was bobbing up and down really hard. "You just did. I asked you a question, and you rattled off without knowing." she explained. I thought for a moment. She did have a point. I DID just rattle off about a teacher's life. I had just given myself a good example of what to say during my blind date. Yang Yang was holding her phone out. "I just recorded it and sent it to Rathi, Yokie and Jian." she said. "Here's their response." She played the recording the 'teachers' had just sent. All i could hear was whooping and cheering. "So just act natural," finished Jo. "Just act like you're talking to yourself at the wall." Now how does she know i do that?
Soon it was 30 minutes to 7.00. I wanted to go a bit later, but Diya insisted that the gentleman must always wait for the lady, rather than the other way around. So i did. I got dressed and made my hair look sexy by putting water on it to look shiny. I put on my awesome straight white shirt, and Jo sprayed some bad smelling perfume all over me. She said that girls like that scent, but to me it smelled sour and icky. We met at Tampines Mall where Jian, Rathi and Yokie were waiting. They all looked completely exhausted. "Here," said Jian, dumping the huge pile of worksheets at me. I passed them to Diya, took a deep breath and went in.
"Remember!!" whispered Jian, "Her name's Clarice!!!" I nodded and walked in,searching for my Clarice. There she was! She was sitting there, looking just like how i saw the other day, so beautiful and young and delicate. I walked over nervously, pressing a hand on my sexy hair and hoping she liked it and said softly, "Clarice?" She looked up and her eyes lit up. She smiled the sweetest smile at me and stood up to shake my hand. It smelled like flowers. I just hoped the smell was strong enough to cover the bad cologne i was wearing. "How nice to meet you!"she said pleasantly. "And your name is..." "Choong Chai. Loh Choong Chai!"i said, smiling uncontrollably. I couldn't believe this was actually happening! "So! Clarice! Shall we...get something to eat first?"i said awkwardly, and she nodded and got a waitress. I know most of them are probably from China, but this one looked horribly familiar.
Xuan was dressed as a waitress. "What can i get you?" she said in a chinese accent. I still couldn't believe my eyes. What was she doing here?!?! "Sir?" she asked, staring at me. "Uuh,just get us warm water first please," i spluttered. Xuan walked off and a waiter took over. But he didn't look male. In fact,'he' looked strangely like Yang. Her hair was hidden in a weirdass cap. "What specialties are you serving today?" asked Clarice, and the male Yang said in a deep voice,"We have pork chop noodles and Xiao Longbao. We also have fried rice. Would you like some? It's very fragrant." Clarice nodded, and male Yang ticked some stuff off that little menu. "So," began Clarice. "What do you work as?" I gulped. "I'm a teacher. A Maths and Physics teacher. At Bandset Girls' School." i said, wishing i didn't sound so choppy. I guess i was still in shock. Clarice looked really impressed. "Wow!! You must be really smart!" she gasped, and i blushed. "And what about you?"i replied. "Oh i'm a clarinet tutor. You know, if a certain school's band's clarinet section needs help, i give them tuition!" she said shyly. My heart jumped and my stomach churned as i remembered how Xuan and Yang had disguised themselves as waitresses and waiters. "That's really cool! Which schools do you usually go to?" i asked casually, already knowing the answer. "Oh,Bandset Girls' School." she said. "Really! I've never seen you around!" i joked, trying not to puke again as i remembered the first time i saw her. "Well,we all are a little busy!" she said, laughing a little. Awkward silence followed. This was interrupted when Yang came over and served Xiao Longbao. It's those really yummy dumplings which have meat and soup in them, and DTF makes the best ones. As a gentleman,i asked Clarice to start first. We both ate in silence until she accidentally scalded herself. "Are you okay?" i asked worriedly as she drank some water. "It's just a small burn." she reassured me. Soon, Xuan served our noodles and fried rice. They really did smell fantastic. We ate and chatted about stuff, and she kept making me laugh from all the gossip from Bandset Girls', and was really sweet. After the date, we very sadly parted ways. I swore she winked at me before walking off.
I then saw Xuan and Yang dashing out of the restaurant into the toilets to change. "How was it?" Yokie asked excitedly, and i nodded happily. Jian smirked. "What was Xuan and male Yang doing in there though?" i asked, waiting for an explanation. "They just wanted to make sure your date went okay." said Diya. "So they nicked uniforms and dressed up as waitresses and waiters to ensure you were ok." I seriously could not believe my ears. Those 2 were extremely, extremely daring, crazy and risky people.
