Xuan's POV
Dear Diary,
Today was really quite special. Diya invited all of us to the Band room, plus some of our ex-batch mates,15 minutes before Band. "What's the holdup,Diya?"i complained. "There's gonna be a mighty lunch rush later,i gotta prepare even though nobody comes to my stall." "Hush up and listen, dummy,"she hissed, and cleared her throat. Everyone's eyes were on her.
"So,"she started awkwardly,"i'm sure you're wondering why i gathered y'all here today. It has been somehow brought to my attention that even though our Band is doing okay,it's still not good enough. It has gotten even smaller through the years, and i'm afraid that if this standard continues,we might have to join Bands with our neighbouring school,Bandset Secondary." I frowned. As far as i know,Bandset Secondary School is a co-ed school that has a marching band. Our school used to be part of it many many years until Ms Siew(bless her)decided to turn our school's Band into a (cue drumroll) Symphonic Band. We were all aware that if our Band continued to decrease in size,we might disappear completely back to where we started:Bandset Secondary's Marching Band. That, was everyone's worst nightmare.
"So,"continued Diya, driving me out of my daydream,"i have called you all back to ask for your help. We may not have been the best players, but honestly speaking we are still kinda better than the current members." We all blushed, because that is a really 不要脸(shameless)thing to say. "So whaddya'll think? Can we be seniors again?"said Diya. No one spoke. A sudden surge of energy went through me. "OI!!! SHE SAID CAN WE BE SENIORS AGAAAAIIIIN?!?!?!?!?!"i yelled. Our friends looked stunned, then again not surprised. This wasn't the first time i yelled at the top of my lungs. Rathi elbowed me. "Bruh keep it down, you don't want the other teachers wondering what we're doing here."she said nervously. "So can we do this?!"i whisper shouted, and they nodded.
It was around five minutes to CCA and the canteen was packed. I was busily dishing out porridge when Yokie appeared and signalled to me to go with her. I hastily packed all my stuff up and slammed the shutters down and ran into the band room. Everyone was there, and the students who were there already looked confused at what was going on. "Ok,we all have combine first. Your alumni seniors are gonna join you. Don't stare at me like i'm crazy okay, this is for all y'all good." It was actually a really great feeling,to get to our instruments and ask them if they remembered us. (I know Dahao does cos i constantly tell him that i lurve him)
The first tuning note filled our ears and we all suddenly felt pangs of nostalgia. Ah,all those times when we were yelled at for being out of tune. We would never hear that voice again.(😢😭😭😭😭😭) Diya got the Sec One juniors to play their tuning note, then got Jo to go to one side and tutor Eva for a short while. The poor girl(Jo,not Eva)seemed so terrified of teaching Ed Eew's daughter but still plucked up the courage to help her. We all knew that Jo was just the right person for the job because she wouldn't have treated Eva like enemy, instead like a regular junior. Although Diya had mentioned that the Band was getting smaller,it was still very comforting to see all the members of the Band putting in their best effort. Yang and Jo used to play either with one or two of their juniors or alone, and even I had to rely on my junior to teach my other juniors because of the whole studies thing that slammed itself at me like a rabid cannon ball.
Diya got started on pieces soon, and we all played together for the first time after like, super long? Some of us had deteriorated a bit, some of us had gotten better, and some of us just stayed at the same standard. The pieces were the same, but the music was much louder and had more colour and life to it. My "super junior"junior had told me quietly that she had seen many teachers and students gather outside the band room just to hear the music that calmed their souls after a tiring day at work/school. That was what we were meant to do:create harmony through music. And as long as i know, that spirit lingered in us for days to come.
