Xuan's POV

Dear Diary,
Today during Band,Diya gave us a few new songs to play. They were easier than the ones we used to play as students, which made us kind of relieved. One was a song that was sort of like "In A Persian Market",and had a very exotic feel, like as if we were in another country. We took a few sectionals to learn everything, but it wasn't so bad. The drilling we had gone through in the past was much worse.

It was holiday practice. The first 4 hours would be sectionals then combine, which was usually scales and warmups and stuff. Diya spent no effort at all criticising us,telling us we were not playing together and that our sound clashed and had this awful wavering sound. It was tough, and my stomach felt empty although i had eaten an extra breakfast. Yes,i actually ate an EXTRA BREAKFAST. I know that's super greedy but i just didn't want to starve during the first half of band. I nearly did, despite my second breakfast. My mind was like a sponge that had absorbed to its maximum and was unable to take in any more.
"Xuan! You get this part?"
I nodded my head in this really dumb way that made her and the entire band laugh. It seems that when i was a student i used to do that during band whenever Ms Siew asked me a question. She said it made me look dumb and like an old person.
"You look like my grandmother. Of course, she's not around anymore." Thanks,Ms Siew. :")

So anyway,we finally had our lunch break and Rathi and i took the Double Basses and Tubas out for a nice lunch....at the food court. I mean, the food is cheap and good, what could be better? While digging in to one of the most delicious chicken rice,Rathi and i then told them about how once upon a time, our own school teachers had thought of closing the Band down because of the lack of members. "We were lucky enough we got a huge lot like yours to join,or the Bandset Girls' Band would have been mere memories of the past."i said dramatically. Rathi started to giggle. "And we also got more members for the Xuan Club."she said. I rolled my eyes and tried not to blush in embarrassment as the juniors looked at us in confusion.

"So when we were students, our dear conductor made fun of people who had funny reactions to her questions or instructions. Diya kinda learned from her,"i said reluctantly. "I was one of them cos' she thought the way i nodded or shook my head instead of saying yes or no was very amusing. Then another one of these kind of people popped up. So she started classifying us into these stupid 'clubs' according to how we reacted to her questions." Rathi then told them how i,on the same day the 'Xuan Club' was formed, had messaged them in caps and asked them to join the 'Xuan Club' so i wouldn't be lonely. "Well that's not nearly MY fault!!"i cried indignantly as she ignored me and continued eating.

After lunch we had combine again, and Diya managed to inject some humour into the next 4 hours. "You'll be performing this piece for your school,"she said. "Anybody know what the symbols on your school crest mean?" Silence. Of course,me and all the other alumni seniors knew, but we thought we'd not say anything to see if anyone really did know. Nobody answered her. "Nobody?? Seriously?! Rathi why didn't you ever tell them?"she said playfully, and Rathi gave a mock scowl to the Band as they giggled shyly. "You never thought to yourself what the lion on your badge means? Or the horseshoe? No one?!" Then she launched into a long talk about how the era with no technology had done better than the era with technology and blah blah blah blah....we were all either bored to tears or amused at what combine had turned out to be. There was so much more laughter than before. And i hoped it would stay that way.

Xuan
