Xuan's POV

Yes, the title says "New Year" but that certainly does not mean this will be about the New Year celebrations! Nope, this shall be a dreary chapter about the first day of school and how I almost died-well, sort of.

With us back at the old campus, it certainly took a much longer time for us all to get to school, especially by public transport. I myself had to wake up at the wee hours of the morning, and stumble around getting ready. I was basically some big bear with disgusting eye dirt and tangled hair, and really really comfy pyjamas that just made me want to collapse into bed and sleep again.

Well, the first day of school, especially for canteen vendors like me, is exceptionally chaotic. (In case you forgot, i sell fish porridge😊) The school hadn't told us any recess timings or how many people there would be roughly. You can imagine my surprise when the bell rang, and at least a thousand people came pouring into the canteen. What a sight! I was glad for once that my porridge wasn't all that popular, or my fingers would have all broken off and I wouldn't be able to write this. The poor people in the stalls next to me were absolutely exhausted, and I heaved a quiet sigh of relief.

During lesson time I mooched around in my stall, feeling a little bored. I had finished reading an ancient copy of "The Hobbit" that we had found in the Band room during packing season, and no teacher felt like having porridge. The weather was that uncomfortable sort of hot, and the hot air from the stove rose and made the air feel stale. I was sweating like a pig till I decided I could take it no more.

"Hey, could I have a cold Milo packet please?"
"That'll be 90 cents."
"Thank you!"
The first sip of heaven hissed down my throat as it calmed the burning feeling with much ease. I closed my eyes and savoured the icy pleasure. It was enough to get me back to my stall.

Band started not so long after, and i saw Band girls streaming once again on the familiar path to the Band room. I smirked. It felt like yesterday when i first walked into the slightly dingy Band room, where smells of staleness made you dizzy with ecstasy, and everything could be heard. As weird and out of place a home that was, it WAS a home. Tears spill, saliva drips, laughter echoes in our dungeon of a Band room.
