the meaning of idolatry

the extreme admiration
love, reverence
for something or someone
is a dictionary definition
but we have inflated that
on multiple occasions
as a society
we take the images of idols
and twist them to fit the molds
we set as precepts for ourselves
in this modern world
there is only the golden calf and its subjects
taking all of their gold to add onto the pedestal
they've set, this inanimate object
has no thoughts nor feelings
but we treat it with the care we would a child
the affection we would a parent
we have turned a metal cow into a god
literal bullshit for everyone involved
idols in all of their forms
are to us as we are to each other
we look up to those we wish to see as ourselves
and hope that we are enough
join hands and voices in commotion
thanking often, screaming always
but in joy or in anger, it may not be discernible
to a passerby unawares
idols in all of their forms
are to us as we are to ourselves
criticizing, creating personas
in our heads, we are better and worse
than we understand in many different facets
that does not mean
that we should not treat ourselves with respect
and try to understand ourselves
when we cannot continue continuing
as we always have
idols in all of their forms
are to us as we are to humanity
every contribution, positive, negative, neutral
electricity is negative charges with positive effects
and thus we are in a similar way
rubbing our socks on woolen carpeting
create a current of love and caring
within ourselves, to share with the world
for everyone deserves as we deserve
to heal and to be and to set free
give that of yourself to this moment
which you are able to give, however
giving to the world does not mean
to drain yourself of the light
that must persist within you, a light
which you want to share with the world
let yourself shine brightly
and when your energy is running low
give others the chance to contribute to you
as they do to the universe
idols in all of their forms
are to us as we are to rings
adding fuel to a relationship, melt the gold
not to make a calf, but to experience and learn
that gold is not as strong as we think it is
to make an idol out of gold means that
each of us should give a bit of our hearts
fashion each piece a bit differently
some for strength and others for resistance
perhaps a couple with scratches
as a reminder that it's okay to have them
some that are weaker but able to change
and some with gemstones
for we are all treasures for each other's wonder
the meaning of idolatry these days
is equivalent to isolation
in some ways
what we dream of
is too much to ask of anyone
all we can do
is provide respect
and give love
at the end of a day.
