Jemma stumbled back to her room wordlessly and rather ungracefully. Coulson had just fired her, more or less. He wanted her to take temporary leave so she could figure out her feelings for Fitz. She had told both Skye and Coulson about what Leo had said at the bottom of the ocean, but it now felt like she had betrayed Fitz by telling them about their private conversations. Or maybe she was just upset she had lost her excuse to not think about it, to work constantly to avoid breaking down.
Now Jemma felt even emptier than she had before. No work to fill her up, and no Fitz. Who was she now? Just a regular girl with a slightly greater knowledge of science than most. She found her way back to Fitz's pod, and stood in the doorway, deciding whether to go in or not. If she did, she knew she would just start crying again. She would be broken down some more. If she didn't, would she even be able to come to the realization of how she truly felt about Fitz, past the clouded confusion?
Glancing around the lifeless room, she saw the depth of Fitz. The complication she had never realized was there before yesterday. It was too cluttered, both physically with Fitz's souvenirs and collections and mentally with memories that could have meant something different. That time she had dropped by to thank him for finishing the antiserum, what did he think that was? She had to think through Fitz's mind, now. She wouldn't be able to fix this in her own mind. Yet now she wondered if she had really known Fitz's mind. She didn't see it in his eyes when he talked to her until he blatantly said it. Had she been so immersed in her own work that she didn't realize Fitz's suffering inside?
When did this all start? She found herself pondering the question over and over. Had she missed out on years of hopeless love and devotion? Had Fitz loved her since University?
Just like superheros, Fitz's love had an origin story. And Jemma was determined to find it out.
