"Agent Simmons," Coulson started. Jemma looked down at the floor of his new office. Construction had just finished in the Playground. Now Coulson had a wooden-paneled, bookshelf-covered workplace with a desk at the back of the room and a few chairs and tables at the front. "I heard about what happened at the medical center last night." he said grimly. Jemma avoided eye contact and looked ashamed. On the inside she wanted to smile, though. Fitz had spoken her name. It was a medical miracle.
"I believe it's a stupid rule that someone of your credentials is not allowed to visit various patients as she pleases." he continued. Jemma looked up, confused. "So I have taken it upon myself to change the rule. Now any level four or above agent certified in medicine will not have to obey visiting hours. They may visit whomever they please, whenever they please." he finished with a smile.
"Wait, so you mean I-"
"You can visit Fitz now, if you'd like." Coulson finished for her. She nodded speechlessly and enthusiastically, thanking Coulson briefly before heading back to her room. She fixed her hair, and packed a small bag with pajamas and toiletries, already intending on staying with Fitz through the night.
As she ran down the halls of the bus, she screamed "See you all at visiting hours!" She got into the van Coulson already had waiting for her, and sped off to the hospital.
---------------------------------------------
She arrived just as regular visiting hours began, but displayed her ID proudly to each nurse that walked past her anyways. When she made her way to Fitz's room, there was no Fitz there. Panic clenched her stomach.
Had he woken up? Had he been moved to a severe medical unit? What had happened since earlier this morning that caused him to not be the one place she expected him to be, right here on this hospital bed? She basically ran to the reception desk, interrupting a conversation as she demanded, "Where's my Leopald Fitz?"
The receptionists looked at each other in doubt. Jemma held up her ID card, and one of the receptionists started to talk. "Agent Simmons, Mr. Fitz has been moved to the long-term sector of the hospital. His new room number, if you'd like it, is 644." Jemma didn't thank her, just took off towards an elevator, jabbing the up button repeatedly until the doors opened.
She rushed inside and pressed the '6' button, then stood back, anticipating the door opening. When she stood still, she realized this was the most physical activity she had done in her life. She was never very into sports, and the schools her parents had sent her to never required serious physical education classes. Jemma was panting now, in an elevator filled with strangers. She didn't care though. She wouldn't care about anything until she saw Fitz safe.
Why was she acting like this? She saw him yesterday. She went several days without talking to him before. Maybe this was her payment for Fitz's sacrifice. She was thanking him by being with him constantly. Or maybe she was feeling differently about him. She smiled. She had just made her decision, in this elevator full of people she didn't know.
When the elevator stopped at the sixth floor, Jemma sprinted out and into the hallway. She followed a sign's directions and ran down a hallway and turned. She found room 644.
Jemma breathed a sigh of relief. It was more like a pant of relief, though, because she was still breathless. She made her way into the room and found Fitz, laying on the bed, unmoving.
"Fitz?" she called. He didn't respond. She knelt down by his bed and said it again. "Fitz?" Still no response. Jemma pulled a chair over to the side of Fitz's bed. "I brought an overnight bag, Fitz," she told him. "I will wait for you." she whispered.
---------------------------------------------
After several members of the team dropped by, Jemma sat alone with Fitz, munching on the sandwich Skye had brought her. She hadn't left the room at all today. She used the bathroom in his room and ate what nurses and others brought her. She insisted on staying put, next to his bed, until he woke up.
"Agent Simmons, visiting hours are over." a nurse said as he entered the room. Simmons simply held up the ID she carried in her pocket while the nurse checked the monitors. "Ah." he said, then began to change the oxygen tank Fitz was using. Jemma helped as best she could.
"When are you going to leave?" the nurse asked her. "Not to be rude." he added.
"When Fitz is better." she said with a small smile.
"Not to disappoint, but Fitz probably won't be better until next month," the nurse stated.
"I'm staying." Jemma replied firmly.
"Oh," the nurse said in understanding. "Is he your boyfriend?"
Jemma blushed. "No. Well... It's complicated."
"Oh, I get it. That's how my wife and I started. She actually thought I was gay at first..." Jemma laughed. He smiled. "It wasn't funny to me at the time. I guess she thought so because I'd never shown interest in other girls. Also, I mean, I'm a male nurse."
"What's your name?" Jemma asked, laughing.
"Rory Williams." he replied. Jemma's eyes widened as they shook hands.
"You mean, Rory Williams, married to Amy Pond?" she asked excitedly.
"Yeah. How did you know my wife? Are you one of her friends?"
"Uh, sure." Jemma replied, internally fangirling.
"Okay. See you around...?"
"Jemma Simmons." she told him.
"See you around, Jemma."
As soon as he left Jemma turned to Fitz.
"Fitz! That was Rory Williams! Rory Williams works for S.H.I.E.L.D.!" she nearly shouted at him. "You know, you should really reply to me when I say something like that."
She ruffled his knotted hair, then rested her head next to his. She gazed peacefully at his face, thinking of him as merely sleeping. She leaned forward the slightest bit, then hesitated. After a moment of consideration, she moved her face a last inch towards him, pressing her lips firmly on his.
Suddenly, Fitz gasped, forcing Jemma away. The monitors started beating rapidly as he flickered his eyes open. He stared around the room, then shook his head jerkily and sat up, ripping the tubes out of him.
"Fitz?" Jemma asked awe fully.
"Jemma!" he said, then brought her tightly into his weak arms. Jemma was in shock now, but relaxed into the embrace. "You saved me." Fitz whispered.
"You saved me."
"I love you." she told him as she left his arms. "I realized it when I was without you over the past few days," Fitz stared at her in happy disbelief. "Leopald Fitz, I love you." She had barely finished before Fitz had pulled her in for another sweet kiss.
"You already know that I love you, Jemma." he told her. And they both knew, through each others' sacrifices and actions, that their promise was true.

Quick Note: I think this will be the last in the series. I might do more mini-series like this throughout the summer. For example, my Doctor Who/Fitzsimmons crossover will probably be a series. (Did you like Rory's cameo?) I hope you all enjoyed it!
