Quick Note: It has occurred to me that this is the most-read Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fanfiction on Wattpad, which is overwhelming. Thank you guys for reading and voting and commenting! It means a lot to me. Really. Like if I was ever in a fight, which is unlikely because I'm probably literally the nicest person in my school, but if it were to happen, I would definitely pull out this book as a defense. People in Australia and Europe care about my existence, take that!
I kind of forgot that Trip died while I wrote this, so just continue in your state of denial and #TripLives.

Simmons was to be in the field, tracking Raina down over New Year's Eve, which was making Fitz very upset. Obviously, their relationship still had a long ways to go, but they had finally started working at it. And the way she had been so quick to cling to him during the earthquake only encouraged him in his thought that they could possibly, if he worked up enough courage, have a New Years kiss.
Naturally, upon finding out that wouldn't be physically possible, Fitz's grumpiness level skyrocketed. And the rest of the team not only noticed, but became increasingly annoyed at his persistent moody attitude. Simmons was oblivious, as always, and she constantly defended Fitz's actions, saying it was just hunger or sleep deprivation. (Simmons, although she had two PhDs, wasn't the brightest with people skills.)
Skye eventually convinced Simmons that something was wrong, however, so right before the mission, the biochemist approached him in the garage.
"Are you mad?" Jemma questioned lightly.
"I'm fine," Fitz lied obviously. Simmons frowned at him, and he rethought his reply.
"Yes, I am mad," he said eventually, then sat down on a crate behind him. Simmons followed his lead and pulled over her own crate chair. If this was the most comfortable way for them to talk, so be it. They were talking.
"You're going to be away over New Years," Fitz continued, hoping she would catch on. "Have you heard of the New Years tradition at midnight? The one that couples do?" he asked in a whisper, feeling the blush rising on his face.
"You mean the countdown kiss, right?" Simmons suggested gently, still unsure where their conversation was headed.
"Um, I wanted to do that. With you." Fitz looked at the floor, not bothering to check her reaction. He didn't know why he was doing this anymore. People only ever rejected him.
"I'm sorry, Fitz," Jemma responded genuinely, then scooted her crate a little closer to his and rubbed circles on his back. "You know I have to go on the mission."
Fitz remained shut down and closed off from her comforting voice, only focusing on his sadness.
"Fitz, we can't kiss at midnight, and I apologize about that," Simmons continued, then dropped her hand, which had started shaking.
"But," she couldn't find the courage to finish that. Instead, she pulled his head up and pushed her lips awkwardly against his.
When they broke away from each other, Fitz stayed silent.
"Sorry, um, I'm not a good kisser," Simmons said with forced laughter.
"No, that was, uh..." Fitz trailed off, in search of a perfect word. "Extraordinary."
"Okay," Simmons said, and eased up a little. Now she could smile sincerely, which reflected on Fitz's face, as well. After she had really realized what she had done, though, she stood rather suddenly. Her face turned pink. "I've got to go out to the field now... Bye."
"Bye," Fitz said in a daze. It had taken awhile to sink in. He had just kissed Jemma Simmons for New Years.
