An Evolved Crush

It really was a schoolboy crush at first. Fitz met Jemma at the academy and almost instantaneously liked her. Maybe not romantically at first, but he had liked her.

At some point between graduating and getting assigned to Coulson's team, it had grown. He had started to imagine in a completely innocent, first-crush sort of way. Because it was his first real crush. His high school days were filled with focus on classes and discovery, not girls like most of his peers.

He would lay in bed at night and start to form conversations that he would never have the courage to initiate. He thought about her smile and her jokes. He thought about when they brushed hands when they both reached for equipment at the same time. He thought of what she thought of him. Eventually he had himself convinced that she liked him, too, though that was not the case once he applied logic. He over-examined every action Jemma made, creating a secret love for him out of a quick glance his way. It hurt him, too. But a good kind of hurt. He liked feeling this way, and even when he told himself he needed to stop, he kept on returning to those same thoughts.

After a few months of this, Fitz began to wonder if he had gotten over his crush or not. Each time he thought about Jemma, it became less butterflies-in-his-stomach-y, less magical. Now he retired to his room as soon as possible in the evenings so he could try to rebuild that feeling. He couldn't decide if he was merely too comfortable with his crush or if it was slipping away, and he was somehow over her. He knew it wasn't the latter when he kept returning to the same thoughts of confessions of love and a beautiful future with her.

Once the Hydra situation had revealed itself, Fitz had decided something very big. Something that would impact the rest of his life. He was in love with Jemma. Jemma was his first love. He gave up doubting himself on this matter. Did he want to be in love? Well, maybe yes and maybe no. But could he stop it? Certainly not. Leo Fitz was completely and hopelessly devoted to Jemma Simmons. And he liked it. It gave him a purpose. His purpose was to protect, heal, and love Simmons. If she returned his feelings or not, he would always be there for her.

(Except for when he goes unconscious in the finale.)

Quick Note: Sorry for that ending. ^. I couldn't resist. I know, I'm evil. So, I'm not sure if this makes sense, but it's kind of what I think happens to Leo throughout the season. His affection only grows and grows, and eventually he's stuck on her. He will always be with her, protect her until the end, heck, he would die for her. So I can't see how Fitzsimmons won't become canon. They'll always be physically with each other, and after Fitz's confession to Jemma...

I mean, she can't just reject him, right? RIGHT?
