When the world turned to shit, I was alone. I had gone for a walk and when I got back, my family were gone. I had no idea where they were or how long they would be gone for so I didn't panic. I thought they were just on an impromptu business trip or something of that ilk. So I stayed in my house for 2 days, waiting in vain for their return. I began to get worried, and tried calling both my parents. Neither of them picked up, so I tried my best friend Luke. He wasn't answering either. That was the night I saw it on the news.

"Everybody must evacuate the major cities and make their way to one of 5 military bases situated in your area. Remain calm. This virus will be contained." I freaked. I had no idea where my parents were, none of my friends were answering my calls and my neighbours seemed to be missing as well. I shut the TV off and packed a bag full of food, clothes and medicine. Then I ran. I ran as far as I could. My neighbourhood was deserted as was the majority of my city.

For a few weeks I was safe, finding shelter in bus stops and abandoned buildings. I stole food from vacant shops and I was getting along just fine. That was until I saw my first walker.

Shoving food into my bag, I walked along the aisles of a deserted grocery store. Suddenly, there was a groan from outside. I paused my actions and whipped around to face the window. What I saw still haunts me to this day. It was a person, but barely. Their face was bloody and mangled, their eyes completely white and wide open. Its hair was a knotted mess and its clothes were ripped to shreds. It raised a hand to the glass and dragged it downwards, creating an awful squeaking sound. I covered my ears and backed away from the door. Grabbing a knife from the rack beside me, I readied myself for what I was about to do. I knew I had to kill it, or else it would kill me.

Silently I opened the door. It turned on its heavy feet and stumbled towards me. With tears in my eyes, I drove my knife through its skull, turning away as it fell to the floor. I gathered up my possessions and sprinted away from the store, sobbing helplessly.

A few weeks later, I was found by a man called Oscar and his wife Cecilia. They took me in and allowed me to board their boat. We sailed around the Pacific for a few months before we ran out of food. Cecilia lasted 2 weeks before she died of starvation. I vividly remember Oscar's cries as he put a bullet through his dead wife's head. Soon after, Oscar killed himself.

I couldn't steer the ship, so I ended up crashing into a bunch of rocks. The ships engine blew and all I remember of that is a searing heat, and a large force throwing me up in the air. I didn't know how long I was out for, but when I woke up I was lying on a hard surface. My vision was blurred and my ears were ringing. An excruciating pain in my side caught my attention. I couldn't move anything except my mouth. Panicked voices alerted me that I was not alone. As my vision cleared, I made out the faces of a middle-aged woman, a teenaged boy with straggly hair and a girl who must have been his sister. The woman was trying to talk to me, but the ringing in my ears made it impossible to hear her. I felt pressure on my side and I yelped in pain. Suddenly, soft hands cupped my face. The girl rested my head in her lap.
"Hey, hey. It's gonna be ok. We've got you now." Her soothing voice was the last thing I remember before I blacked out again.

When I came to, I registered a smooth hand on my forehead. Slowly, so as not to aggravate the pain in my head, I opened my eyes. The girl who had held me as I passed out was checking my temperature and writing something down in a notebook. She smiled as she saw that I was awake.
"You're awake." Her voice was low and filled with fatigue. She had bright green eyes and brown hair, and a jawline to die for. I immediately thought she was the most gorgeous girl I had ever laid eyes upon. I nodded, but waves of pain crashed over my head. I groaned and scrunched up my face against the agony. I heard her quick footsteps exit and then re-enter the room. "Here." She placed a pill against my lips and handed me a cup of water. I swallowed it down and laid back against my pillow.
"What happened?" I rasped out. She sat down on the bed beside me.
"We saw your boat explode and we found you in the wreckage. You were bleeding out so we took you on board. Travis removed the piece of metal from your side and my mom's been monitoring your vitals. I come in here every morning and night to see if you're up yet." She rushed out. I stared at her, taking in the information. I raised the cup of water to my mouth again and sipped it gingerly.
"How long have I been out for?"
"2 weeks and a day." My eyes widened slightly. That long? "Travis kept you pretty drugged up after the removal so you were safe." That made sense at least.
"So what's your name?" I asked.
"Alicia, and yours?"
"Y/N."
