(y/n)'s POV
"So are you sure you're okay?" Dan asked as we neared my house. His hand slid in mine and I assumed it was for balance.
"Yeah, how are you holding up. I mean he punched you." I said, my guilt flooding to the surface.
"Nah, I'm fi--" He stumbled slightly, wincing and I caught him.
"Fine?" I asked, smiling sadly. "You alright there?" I asked, holding him up. He looked up at me, his face red and close to mine. What you would describe a frontwards trust fall to look like.
"Uh...yeah..." he stuttered, pulling away from me, flustered and babbling.
"What's gotten into you?" I asked, stepping closer.
"Nothing, just a little loopy." he said, stepping back onto my front drive.
"Dan?" I asked, reaching out.
"Let's just head inside." he said. I closed my mouth looking down.
"Yeah." I muttered, averting my eyes to my hands, wringing them in each other. Just a few seconds ago he was holding my hand, but now he won't even come near me.
That was just for stability you idiot.
I swallowed. That's right. I followed him up the marbled stones in the path to my front door. I held the door after he opened it and we both entered. Phil, Zoe, and my mom were there in the front hall, watching us enter. My mom was sat on the stairs with Phil and Zoe lazily leaning up against separate walls. I saw Phil tense, ready to move if he had to, and I held out a hand low to my side to stop him, but he stayed ready in his spot. Dan's face was still beet red for some reason and my mom was suspicious, I could tell. She locked eyes with me, her gaze cold and suggestive. I shook my head at her and she eased up. Zoe avoided everyone's gaze fully, running her nails along each other as casually as she could.
"How was your walk?" my mum asked. Zoe's fingers stopped for a second before resuming their circling, removing dirt underneath or around them if there was any. My mom was still pushing her theory that we had gone to do something, against her liking. I shared a glare with her and Dan's face flushed harder, making our case worse.
"Wonderful. Weather's nice." I said.
"And why is Dan changed?" my mom asked.
"We stopped by his so he wasn't wearing that suit. Adrian says hello by the way." I commented.
"(y/n) may I speak with you?" my mom asked. I sighed silently and followed her into the kitchen. "What are you doing with that boy?!" she asked, grabbing my arm. I yanked it away.
"Mom, trust me. I can handle myself and he's nice. Not everyone will take a beating for me." I said.
"(y/n), I just." My mom let out a breathy, but pained, sigh. "I don't want you hurt again. I can't look at that again. It hurt me." she said, her eyes red and strained.
"Mom, I won't." I said, pulling her into a hug.
"Promise?"
"Promise." I said. She hugged me back and she shooed me away, going to make herself some tea. I walked out of the kitchen, into the thick silence. I waded through the awkwardness for a few moments.
"Want to go upstairs?" Zoe suggested. I nodded and we all followed her.
"I'm going to put on better clothes." I said, disappearing into the bathroom. I returned to quiet chatter and I sat down, my legs criss crossed underneath me.
