Backstory cont.: She attempted to model the most high-powered firearm or other weapon that she could realistically make or acquire in a short period of time, drawing out several plans and making completely plausible, scientifically accurate designs. She was so far removed from reality, and while she sort of understood the concept of what was socially acceptable and what wasn't, she believed that the circumstances and cause justified the means.
After lots and lots of research, she eventually settled on some kind of motion-sensing explosive that she would build from scratch. She disassembled various appliances and actually bought some parts, spending most of her free time for one or two months on this project. At this point in time her parents were away, and she was trusted to be independent.
Hiroko eventually created a safe (To her), fully-functional explosive which she hid by the school sports field, intending to have it detonate during a class. It wasn't particularly high-powered and wasn't made to kill lots of people, but she knew it was a possibility. However, the bomb detonated earlier than intended due to strong winds causing non-human movement to be detected. In hindsight, she had made it far too sensitive.
As a result, a large section of the sports field was destroyed, and the incident made national news, bringing it to the attention of Hope's Peak Academy. At her school, Hiroko immediately confessed to what had happened, much to Rena's chagrin. While her school discussed the severity of her punishment, Hope's Peak began their own investigation into her, discovering the other ideas she had designed.
This, and her newfound interest in the subject, led to her being scouted as the Super High School Level Arms Developer. Hiroko was suspended from her current school until the end of the school year, after which she began her life at Hope's Peak.
She proceeded to hone her talent and skills over her years there, graduating and entering almost directly into the workforce. She was immediately offered a position in developing new weapons for the military, to be used if they ever went to war. Her line of work was very secretive, and she made breakthroughs that could possibly change armed conflict forever if the world was allowed to get their hands on it.
Meanwhile, Rena, through a series of complex and completely unrelated events, was scouted as the SHSL Air Force Pilot. This series of events led to her holding an extreme dislike for war, and the people who facilitate and profit off it. This, coupled with her bitterness over Hiroko being scouted while she remained 'average' (This mindset occurred in the years before she herself was scouted), led her to resent Hiroko while still feeling a connection to her as a sister.
Rena believed that Hiroko was giving rise to the industry that facilitated wars and needless killing, while Hiroko thought that what she was doing was providing for Rena's life and future - fulfilling her duty as an older sibling.
Rena's resentment ultimately reached boiling point and she trained a gun on Hiroko while threatening to kill her. Hiroko, however, knew she was bluffing and in actuality just wanted to put an end to her projects, the weapons of mass destruction she could possibly be creating. She knew that Rena couldn't actually bring herself to harm her sister, and she was correct. Still, their relationship remains incredibly strained, but most of the hostility is on Rena's part.
Two years ago, Hiroko's base of operations was attacked by some sort of undercover force coming from inside Japan, rather than foreign spies. Several individuals, with identities disguised, stormed the facility, which only she would be present in. As the only person in the building, she attempted to contact outside help while also staving off the intruders.
She attempted to use a handgun against them, but she had little training in actually operating a firearm and therefore wouldn't operate well under pressure. She suffered a single wound in retaliation - a bullet entered her right arm, shattering the elbow joint.
I like that Hope's Peak noticed her for her talent because she blew up her school, that would have been an interesting conversation between the heads of Hope's Peak for sure. I also like that you went into detail about Rena's relationship with Hiroko and how her morals completely differed from her sister's. I think that Rena becoming the antagonist of Hiroko's story for a short while is a very enthralling idea which I would love to see more of!
Hiroko's lab being ambushed is really interesting and (you said it had something to do with Frozen Mayhem) I would love to see how the pieces connect and what happens at the end!
