This was very annoying, but I decided I wanted to live, and backed away from Luanna, who was still listening intently at the door, her hair falling over her shoulders. I sighed, and gazed around, the curiosity nagging me.

I spotted Alex, and turned to him. "Who is that guy?" I asked him.

He shuddered. "Someone we used to know. He abused us," he whimpered.

I frowned. Alex seemed my age, though I hadn't asked him yet, but he seemed very frightened. And something told me that he was no coward.

"You two were abused?!" I asked.

Luanna gave me an irritated look, though I saw the fear in her eyes. Alex gestured for me to be silent as my little sister approached us.

"Who is that man mommy is talking to?" she complained.

I folded my arms. "No one important, Minerva. Just go and play, or something."

Minerva pouted, but ran off, and I gazed back at Luanna.

She turned to me, immense relief and triumph on her face. "Your mom didn't sell us out," she told me, grinning.

Alex fell to the ground with a huff, and wiped the sweat away from his brow. "Close call," he groaned.

Luanna suddenly yelped, and backed away from the door as it swung open. Alex scrambled up, startled, and even I found myself clutching Luanna's hand, which I let go quickly as she threw me a look.

In the doorway was a young girl about our age, with a soft and thin build, slightly tanned skin with freckles scattered over it, innocent grey eyes, and large, light brown curls falling around her shoulders. I had to admit that she looked very pretty, though there was something in her eyes that, despite their innocence, told me I shouldn't mess with her.

"Alex? Luanna?" she asked in a low voice.

Luanna scowled, and took a step back, but Alex grinned, slammed the door shut and then hugged her tightly. "Evangeline!" he crowed.

She grinned, and kissed both his cheeks. "Alex!" she exclaimed fondly, with a glitter in her eyes that told me she was fond of him.

He tapped her shoulder, and she laughed, and with a loud ripping noise, two fluffly, light brown wings fluttered from her shoulder blades.

"How is this possible?!" I groaned, gripping my head.

Evangeline shot me a look, and took a step closer to Alex, who looked flattered and smug. "Who is he?!" she demanded.

"Just a human we're living with, don't worry" Alex reassured her.

Luanna stepped forward, her face expressionless. "Long time no see, Evangeline," she said coldly.

The girl's wings drooped. "What happened to calling me Eva?" she whispered.

Luanna's eyes narrowed. "How did you find us?"

The girl looked hurt. "I have my sources. And then I followed him. He nearly caught me at it too."

This is getting stranger and stranger, I thought, shaking my head.
