Zero's POV
I glanced at the frustrated Luanna once again. She glared at me. "You didn't suggest anything to them, right?"
"Yeah, I grew wings, so I'm jumping to join the freakshow in school. What do you think?!"
"Good point," she muttered.
I scooted closer to her, but she gave me a warning look. "Not now, Zero."
I huffed, but didn't try anything. "Did Alex say something to you before he left?" she asked me. I shrugged. "How would I know? Only a stupid conversation about how you were his sister and I wasn't allowed to 'use' you."
Luanna's eyes narrowed. "Are you using me, shushnub?"
"Never," I promised her.
Just then, there were footsteps. I stood up to reassure my parents I was fine, when I noticed the two figures weren't tall enough to be my parents. I narrowed my eyes, and then took a step back.
"Your brother is back, Lu," I whispered.
She was frozen, like me. "But that's-"
"The Emma girl," I finished.
Alex' POV
Emma was still holding on to my hand, and it felt awkward, to say the least. I gave Zero and Luanna a nod. "Hey."
They both looked at me with an expression on their face that said: "have you gone mad?"
Yeah, maybe, just a bit.
"This- is- uhhhm-"
"I'm Emma!" the girl chirped, extending her hand and paying no attention to the dripping wings that were extended from Zero's and Luanna's shoulder blades.
Luanna gave her an icy look. "Why are you here?"
"I-I, well, I-" Emma faltered. Luanna folded her arms. "Yeah?"
"Give her a break, Lu!" Zero told her, eyeing the frightened Emma. I threw him a dirty look. If he even thought about-
"Why is she here?" he asked me, in a kinder tone.
"Because she wanted to," I replied. Zero turned his gaze to Luanna, with a puppy look. I relaxed. He clearly wasn't into Emma. Good.
Luanna got up, and walked towards Emma with a threatening look on her face. "Why can't you leave us alone?!"
Emma backed away. "I-I d-didn't m-mean-"
"I d-d-d-d!" Luanna mocked. I shot her a glare. "Stop."
"Why? Is Alex all protective over his little poor copy of Evangeline?"
I turned red. "Shut up!"
"Awh! He is! But she's just a human, Alex-"
"I said, shut up!" I yelled, fighting the tears that were pressing against my eyes.
"Listen, jerkmuffin. She will never be Evangeline-"
"DON'T SAY HER NAME!" I yelled. Zero grabbed Luanna's arm, and pulled her behind his back. "Calm down," he said.
Luanna finally shut her mouth, but I balled my fists. "I'll just go," Emma whispered, wiping at her eyes. I hadn't realized she'd started crying again. "I'm sorry," I murmered.
Emma released my hand, and started walking away, her frame shaking. I ran after her, and gave her a hug. She hugged back shyly, but then pulled away. "I'm not her."
I paused. "I know."
There was another silence. "Will you stay?" I blurted out. She glanced at where Luanna was standing, and hesitated.
