Alex' POV

The girl stepped out of the car quickly, looking uncomfortable, and this time, I didn't feel any emotion. She wasn't Evangeline. Some crazy, weird human duplicate, yes, but not the girl that'd liked me. She was just a scared human.

Evangeline gave us a slight wave, and then sprinted towards her house. I watched her go, and then glanced the other way.

Maybe it was time I got over someone who was dead.

I rubbed my eyes, tired as we were finally back. Luanna was waiting for me, clutching the cootie stick. I just gave her the evil look, and went to my room without wasting another word. I heard Luanna drop the cootie stick and sigh.

Zero's POV

Luanna was getting more nervous with every day passing, knowing school would start soon for us. She was getting more touchy too. I could barely say anything without her snapping at me. And Alex just sulked all day, looking gloomy.

You'd think the world would be a bit more angelic with two angels residing inside my house. Whoops. Three if you counted me.

I scraped my throat. "Uhm, Lu? Can we talk?"

She glared at me. "Talk."

"In private?" I hinted.

She rolled her eyes, but got up. I hesitated before placing my hand daringly on the low of her back, and guiding her to the hall.

"What is it, shushnub?" she asked, flicking my hand away.

"I- well...Will you stop being so touchy? Everytime I say something, or do something, you just lash out at me! And, well...It's hurting me," I admitted.

Luanna narrowed her eyes. "What was that?"

"You heard me!" I said indignantly.

She growled. "Well, aren't you nervous your feathers will be plucked one by one in an institute once they find out we have wings?"

"Yes. But that doesn't mean you have to hurt someone's feelings," I mused, stroking her hair. She sighed, and her shoulders slumped. "I guess you're right," she mumbled.

I hugged her tightly, and kissed her cheek. "It'll be alright, I'm not going to let anyone touch your wings," I promised.

"If you will, I'll have roasted angel for dinner," she growled.

I giggled like a girl, nervous bubbles stuck in my throat. "Well-uhm... I guess I'd better be protective, then!"

She pulled away, but gave me a pat on the head. "Anything else, shushnub?"

I hesitated. There was something else.

Luanna was beautiful. Very beautiful, with her golden locks, and angelic face, slender form...

And I was Zero. The loser. The shushnub. I was no one, except the loser with wings. The unlucky chicken.

And there would be guys at the school. Handsome, sweet guys, that would know exactly how to flatter Luanna and make her like them. And I'd be Zero, the loser, once again.

"Nothing," I told her, giving her a small smile.
