Zero's POV

So here I was, running away, leaving the girl I liked to fight the whole football team.

My parents must've seen this happening, and therefore called me Zero.

Zero. A loser. A nobody. A coward.

I would've felt even worse if Alex hadn't been with me, on the run as well.

Of course, that's when the feeling hit me.

I could feel their presence. The demons. They were close- really close.

Alex, of course, since he couldn't sense them, seemed oblivious, chattering happily to Piper.

I glanced out of the bus' window. That's right. Bus. We were going to another place first, travel to a hidden spot and then we'd go up in the air. Piper had assured us she was great at climbing trees, so if the need arised...She'd be fine.

I watched the sky flit by, and nausea came over me. What if they hurt her badly? What if there were too many of them?

One thing I knew for sure. I'd never forgive myself.

And revenge would be mine.

Piper's POV

"The shushno looks angry," I told Alex. The boy rolled his eyes. "You mean Zero? Well, who cares? He'll be fine. Worry about my sister instead."

He was right. My thoughts drifted off to Luanna, standing alone on the football field at night, waiting to either get beaten up or beat the others up. I knew Luanna expected the latter, but I wasn't quite sure. There was not a doubt in my mind that Mark would ask for the help of all his friends...

I shuddered, and Alex frowned. "Are you okay?"

I gave him a glare. "I was thinking about your sister."

He heaved a sigh. "Well, we couldn't have persuaded her from doing it, so don't beat yourself up about it."

I nodded, and he smiled at me. "Give me a smile back," he pleaded.

My lopsided mouth automatically grinned at his puppy eyes, and his face lit up. "You seem so much warmer when you smile."

I touched his cheek. "I am warmer when I smile, shushno," I laughed.

Alex gave a little jump at my heat, but then laughed with me. The bus stopped, and several people came in, including an old lady. She shuffled our way, but then dropped a pen. Alex and I bent down at the same time to get it, and he hit my head with his.

"Ouch!" we both exclaimed at the same time. I flushed at the close proximity of our faces, and Alex leaned in to-

"RUN!" Zero yelled, storming out of the bus.
