Chapter Twelve: Emma On The Run

Third person pov
𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝐭𝐡, 𝟐𝟎𝟎𝟓

" Thanks for dropping me off, Edward." Emma said with a fake smile when in reality she was scared shitless from everything that happened. Bella and Charlie looked up from the Tv and her seeing the two. Edward nodded his head and looked to her with eyes that said to hurry and not worry, but that was all she could feel.

" It was my pleasure. See you soon, Emma." Edward said before leaving from the door.

Bella smiled while Charlie chugged a beer." You're home early."

" How was the date ?"

" Date went good, but I'm home early because my friend from Arizona needs me. I want to go visit her." Emma said seeing her dad look to her oddly.

" Now ? It's late."

" I know, but you should have heard her on the phone. She needs someone. Her stepmother and stepsister are getting worst when it comes to her."

" Em, I'll drive you early in the morning." Bella said and it was having Emma a bit upset everyone was sort of putting up a fight for her to stay.

She placed a fake smile and shook her head going up the stairs." Bella, trust me, Lily needs me. I'm gonna change real quick." She said getting into her room and closing the door giving an excuse for Bella and Charlie to not come in. She turned around seeing already Edward had two bags already packed for her.

" What am I gonna say to them ? I can't hurt them, but they really want me to stay."

" Then don't, but if they don't let you do soon, you'll just have to. I'll be down at the truck." He whispered before kissing her forehead and taking two bags while she carried one. She nodded opening the door and calmly walking around Charlie seeing his worried face.

" Dad, trust me. I'll be fine. Mom will come home. I'll call her from the road."

" What friend is it ?" Bella asked a bit confused. Emma knew Bella was really just testing her to see if she was telling the truth or not.

" Lily Henry. Remember Miranda Henry. She used to make those good grill cheese when Mom had to work weekends. She died from a bad car wreck five years ago."

" You don't have to drive home right now. You can sleep on it." Charlie said while Emma packed all her medication and shook her head while she walked to the kitchen seeing her keys, ID, and wallet.

" It's gonna be hard without you." Bella said while Emma looked through her kitchen window thinking. What if James was out there ? What if he heard this conversation. He would know their left unprotected.

" You're not. When I found out, Esme and Rosalie Cullen decided they wanted to help you guys while I was away. It's like they'll guard the place." She said loud and clear just in case James was near." Plus, I want to drive. You guys look pretty tired anyway. If I get really tired, I'll pull into a motel...I promise."

" Fine be careful."

" Call me every hour or something. I'll pick you up when you get back from Phoenix." Charlie said, but she could tell he was still beyond worried. He should be. I have a vampire on my tail.

" Thanks dad. Love you." Emma said hugging her father then her sister. She opened the door leaving quickly and left her house. She couldn't fight the tears. She let them free fearing the lives of her family. She wanted nothing bad to happen to them. Something jumped onto the truck making her yelp.

" They'll be fine, Emma." Edward said and she cursed at herself for forgetting about Edward and that" Why don't you let me drive ?"

" I don't want anything bad happening to them. " She said once Edward was settled into the car and driving." You should have seen his face. He didn't want me to leave. He had fear like he did when my mom left him."

" Just don't worry about them now. He's safe. Bella's safe. The tracker's following us." He said when something else jumped on the car making her yelp and grab onto him. He turned and groaned a bit." It's just Emmett. Alice is in the car behind us."

Emma nodded her head while Edward placed his arm around her waist. She quickly placed her head on his shoulder holding tightly to his waist and shut her eyes hoping it was a dream. When they got to the house, Edward quickly got Emma inside, but the first thing they saw was Laurent and Carlisle.

" Emma get behind me."

" Wait ! He came to warn us. About James." Carlisle yelled seeing how quickly Edward placed Emma behind him and was ready to attack. Edward looked at him oddly, but still held a firm grip on Emma behind him.

" This isn't my fight and I've grown tired of his games, but he's got unparalleled senses, absolutely lethal. I've never seen anything like him in my three hundred years and the woman, Victoria. Don't underestimate her." With that said, Laurent left. Emma, Carlisle, and Edward made their way downstairs seeing everyone talking.

" I've had to fight our kind before. We're not easy to kill

" but not impossible. We'll rip him apart and burn the pieces."

" I don't relish the thought of killing another creature. Even a sadistic one like James."

" What if he kills one of us first ?" Rosalie said a bit scared looking to Emmett and Carlisle.

" I'm gonna run Emma south and then lead the tracker away from here."

" No, Edward. James knows you'd never leave Emma. He'll follow you."

" I'll go with Emma. Jasper and I will drive her south. I'll keep her safe, Edward." Alice said looking to the both of them.

" Can you keep your thoughts to yourself ?"

" Yes."

" Rosalie, Esme, could you put these on so the tracker will pick up Emma's scent ?" Edward said while she passed Rosalie. She stopped and turned to the older women.

" Rosalie, here's your perfume."

" Sorry it didn't work. I thought it would."

" It's the thought that counts. Thank you. Also, sorry for the mean comment when we met. That wasn't why I said you were out at baseball."

" I should be apologizing. I guess I...miss judged you. You're pretty cool and if we make it out of this, I'll like to get to know you." Rosalie said while Alice grabbed Emma's hand and went to the car with her. Emma sat back in the seat a bit scared. Edward came over to the car seeing her.

" What if something does happen ?"

" Nothing's gonna happen."

" But what if something does." Emma intervene looking up to him so scared that it caused his frozen heart to break. He stared at his human girlfriend and he felt a lump in his throat when he said human. Emma would put up any fight, but at the end of the day, she was human with a vampire hunter ready to come at her. That placed some determination in Edward to hunt James. With him out that way, Emma will be safe again and that was all he wanted.

" There's seven of us against two of them and when everything's done, I'm gonna come back and get you. I promise that till the end of time. I will always come back and get you. Emma, you are my life now." Edward said and kissed her forehead before the two cars sped off.

Emma leaned back in her seat blinking away a tear. Jasper went to the south and Esme went to Emma's house while Carislile and the others distracted the tracker. It was a race against time. When Emma was near Arizona, she called her mom knowing Bella or Charlie will tell them something.

" Hey, mom. It's me again. Um, you must have let your phone die or something again. You have to remember to charge it. I'm not in Forks, but everything's okay. I went to visit Lily since her new family isn't doing so well. I love you, bye." Emma said hanging up the phone, but she wondered a bit. Was that the last message I was leaving my mother ?
